I'm playing the NES one on Switch and it's basically the same game as the modern one >_> I guess it goes to show how solid the gameplay and strategy of Fire Emblem is if they barely changed the formula after 15ish games

Disgaea has made it impossible for me to play FE explicitly because it's still riding 30 year old mechanics. I've grown too used to all the crazy options that I can do in combat.

FE keeps a fairly similar core style with a lot of smaller mechanical changes between games. Most games in the series have some kinds of little quirks and changes that make them unique.

I like how FE does it, honestly. It does a good job of keeping a nice core style while making things different enough that you can notice the changes when you really dig deeper into it.

What does disgaea add? I've always been interested but the aesthetic/writing kind of puts me off

Stuff like throwing & Magic Change really keep things interesting. Geo Effects can make for some interesting battlefields, as well. Then there's Disgaea's battle animations, which have an over the top charm that no other game really comes close to.

A ton of stuff, but some of the more relevant bits:
  • Moving a unit doesn't end their turn, and you can undo any movement before they take an action. So you can cluster your units to hit them all with an AOE buff and then undo their movements so their turn isn't wasted
  • Units can pick up and throw units. Some units explode when thrown, if you throw an enemy into another enemy they combine into a tougher enemy. The distance you can throw depends on the stats of the unit
  • When spells get more powerful you get more AOE options, but not always in normal ways. So you'll go from single target to diagonal to square to line to cross, etc. So you have to carefully place AOEs around enemy formations. Some abilities will push enemies, meaning you can force enemies into the pattern to best fit your AOE abilities.
  • You can pick up a unit that has picked up a unit, creating a tower that unlocks special team attacks, or you can also chain throw to get a unit across the map
  • You can dive into any weapon's "item dungeon" to level it up and unlock better stats
  • Team attacks can happen with adjacent units, the likelihood depending somewhat on how well the guys get along
  • This also includes team specials, which are pair-specific and usually do a ton of damage
  • You can turn monster allies into weapons, equip them, and then attack with them for bonus damage and shared XP
  • There's a "demon congress" you can petition for things like increasing/decreasing the difficulty, unlocking new features or classes, etc. However, each member has a disposition and you need to bribe them with their favorite items to gain favor
  • Every class unlocks higher ranked versions with better scaling, and you can reincarnate any until into that higher version with better stat scaling
