I'm putting money away for electrolysis, FFS (facial feminization surgery), and breast augmentation. But luckily for me, it was a part of the itch.io bundle I bought last year along with the sequel. If you haven't heard of it, it's like a mystery visual novel game with light puzzle-solving to progress the plot. The gameplay concept is that you've found somebody's lost phone, and you have to go through their texts and emails and online profiles to learn who they are and discover what happened to them. You're basically hacking their phone and reading their shit to get to the bottom of their disappearance - because their phone is blowing up with people trying to get in contact. The writing is a bit stilted. If you've played the first life is strange game, you know the parts where the characters are stressed and talking about how fucked up things are, and you can relate to their stress but their dialogue sounds a little bit stilted and forced? I get that feeling from some of the writing in this game. Not all of it, but it shows. The game really nails like awkward family text messages though, like the uncle who types in all caps and excessive ellipses. The irrelevant world-building dialogue is spot on, whereas the more passionate writing that has to do with the central conflict can be hit or miss. But the concept of the game - finding a lost phone, discovering a mystery in the texts and looking through the texts, emails, picture gallery and associated profiles of the owner to get the full story behind their disappearance? It's a cool gameplay hook. It's a gimmick that works. The visual novel aspect, the reading and the dialogue and all that, is from you reading another person's texts and emails. You're reading their conversations with other people, you're getting hints and flashes of their situation, and then you find another piece of the puzzle that gets you into a new account, elaborates more on the disappearance at hand and subsequently gets you closer to the truth. I'm being as vague about the story as possible - it's very much a game where you should dive in with as little knowledge as possible. If you like the sound of this game, I recommend picking it up the next time it's on sale, on Switch or itch.io. And I would recommend picking it up for cheap, because it's a 2 hour game. Aspects of the game may be uncomfortable, but it's not gonna pull a Doki Doki Literature Club on you or like pull a man hand hook car door.
