A man suspected of trying to steal a vehicles catalytic converter in California died when the car fell on him, police said.
According to Sgt. Shane Carringer of the Anaheim Police Department, the body of a man was found underneath a Toyota Prius at an auto repair lot at about 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, KABC reported.

The man, whose name has not been released, was found dead underneath the car, the television station reported. According to Carringer, it appeared the man was trying to steal the catalytic converter when the jack he was using failed and he was crushed under the weight of the vehicle, KABC reported.

I feel like rather than the jack failing, a auto repair technician saw the guy trying to rob from his customers so kicked the car.

I'm not convinced a jack decided to deliver karma. Because as long as it's straight up he'll just get stuck not killed. Meaning the failure was it went sideways (car kicked).

And since cars don't sit flush with the ground it's fairly likely he was not killed instantly

Shitty jack in the wrong place under the car, tends to not stay in that wrong place for very long.

You'd have to use saw or power tool to cut the thing out so the vibration probably caused it.

... or maybe the idiot didn't know what he was doing and/or did it in a hurry, threw the jack under the car and jacked it up in a spot that wasn't designed to support the weight of the car.

Property > thieves
Due to the cost of cats for many economy cars, a lot of the time insurance companies will total a car out because it's not worth the cost replacing it, which puts the owner of the car into a real shitty situation.

Protip: You don't need to crawl under a car to change a tire.

If you must crawl under a car, you should be using jack stands in addition to the jack itself. I thought this was common sense.

The only vehicles that require that are suv's and trucks. You can remove the spare while the vehicle is on the ground without issue, then jack it up.

Unless there's something in the design that makes it infeasible, newer cats ARE often integrated into the exhaust manifold, or right after it.

We have to do that anyway because the wire insulation Ford uses is made from soy, which is tasty to critters.

You ever seen a squirrel run through an idler pulley? It adds a lot of friction lol
