Presumably that means no more Smash.

Not to be all "the sky is falling" but it's a bit concerning that one brand could dictate what does and doesn't make it to the EVO floor.

That said, the FGC has been slowly sanataized over the last few years, SFV isn't interesting and Marvel is all but dead so I don't really care all that much.

I honestly don't even see the point of it. While it makes sense for consolemakers to buy devs because they're getting first-party titles out of the deal, there's very little advantage to buying a tournament. Especially since if they try to exclude companies or games, you'll just see other tourneys spring up.

E-sports is set to take over other sports in viewership and possibly revenue.

Overlooking the seemingly hyperbolic claims about e-sports' popularity (although *maybe* normal streaming is up there), it's not synergistic with Sony's business which, if you read the sentences after that one, was my whole point. It's not that there isn't value to gaming tournaments, it's that a consolemaker doesn't necessarily gain the kind of value that benefits them directly.

Compare that to the owner of another e-sports tournament. If the owner of one tourney bought a tourney in another genre (like a FPS tourney bought a fighting tourney), then you have synergy because the owner is building an e-sports franchise. Owning multiple tourneys gives each owned tourney added legitimacy. Not only does Sony lack synergy, but it may find itself in the place where its tourney is giving time to things put out by competitors (and if it does try to exclude those things because they involve competitors, it fucks itself because then new tourneys emerge which devalue its product)

sony does more than make consoles

Their gaming division is built around their console business (which is more than just "making consoles" because the consoles themselves are generally loss-leaders and their money is really made on things like licensing fees). Thus buying a dev makes a lot of sense, because it helps them secure exclusives which helps their division's core business by providing a greater perceived value to players. (And they have several devs making exclusives.)

I don't know how much it matters. Evo was already feeling pretty corporate anyways with publishers having pretty major influence on the games being displayed. I would imagine Sony will just continue the trend with the newer games being showcased and the older games being sidelined. I am guessing Sony will try to gain favor of the fighting game publishers by showcasing them well to try to get more exclusive deals with them. And yes, Smash is probably getting das boot.

They needed new ownership after Mr. Wizard went down. I don't know the whole structure of the organization but I assume his absence created a void that needed filling and Sony likely had a foot in the door since the PS4 was the default tournament console.

Nintendo always had a super weird relationship with Smash tournaments but they're also weirdly fine with stuff like Minecraft accounts working on the Switch so it's not really clear what direction they'll take with this. It would obviously hurt EVO's brand/value to not be a/the top tier Smash tournament but staying at the top for everything else wouldn't be a huge step down or anything.

I would imagine they pull out. I doubt Nintendo wants to be supporting a Sony event. I mean, it is cheap views, but Nintendo wants to have a death grip over their franchises and probably can't handle the slight that their franchise is just one of many games in a tournament ran by their competitor.

Although, Smash is too much of a cash cow for Nintendo, so I would imagine they would run a tournament themselves. Smash has always been kind of an outsider in the FGC anyways despite its popularity, so not being in the EVO is probably not huge blunder, since the Smash crowd will just migrate to whatever new platform hosts them. Smash enthusiasts are primarily interested in Smash, not other fighting games.
