Long story short, we took in a kid after he got kicked out by his mom. Things went fine and we moved into a bigger unit so he wasn't sleeping on a couch. His attitude got progressively worse, and we told him in August when the lease is up we'll be finding a new place on our own. He flipped, there was a big fight, he called the cops and moved out to his moms. His name is still on the lease but he hasn't lived here in weeks and keeps his door sealed shut so we don't go in. He's still paying rent through rental assistance but we want him gone.

that is legal related, gotta take it to court to evict.
just my guess. any deadbeat who doesn't pay rent has to be evicted if they don't leave (before the pandemic).

If he's paying rent, you're kinda fucked. However, even if he wasn't paying rent, you'd probably have to go through the courts to evict him.

It's kind of a problem with most first-world nations where legitimate protections against landlords wind up fucking over people for trying to do something nice. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

I'm honestly not sure how much difference that would actually make, because even an apartment can't legally evict you when you stop paying rent (and there might still be pauses on evictions because of the pandemic). afaik they would still need to go through the courts. Of course, hopefully he doesn't know any of that shit so if it does stop paying and you can point that out, maybe he'll just go away.

I wouldn't rock the boat. You're getting money right now in a situation where you don't even have to deal with them being there.

I get that it is a bullshit situation, but in the midst of Covid it's gonna be a hell of a thing to get done to evict and if the kid is a little unstable he might try to make your life a living hell.

why didn't you just straight up talk to him about his behavior before saying you are gonna find another place of your own. you did talk to him, right?

We did. Several times. Even right before that. What you got is just a simplified version, there was a lot that led up to it. We'd given him a ton of chances.
