Lets say you got yourself a PS5 and want to play through some of the major Playstation series over the generations.

You've got

• 2 God of War games
• 1 Ratchet and Clank game
• No Sly Cooper games
• 1 Ape Escape game

I'm pretty sure the only long standing Playstation series you can play all the way through on PS4/PS5 is Uncharted and Jak and Daxter. Even in those cases you're still missing the portable spin-offs.

Just a bit of a bummer.

This is stuff that isn't stuck behind licensing issues or anything either.

PS5 was designed by guys with blindfolds on stepping on their own dicks.

Console's API is a 0.X upgrade of the PS4 with no enhancements besides possible resolution. PS4 games cannot just be improved by doubling frame rate like on the Series X. They have to be remade for the PS5 to take advantage of the hardware. Game saves do not transfer over without much work(buy PS+, download the game twice, lose PS4 save in the end).

Backward compatibility was not thought about until three weeks before ship date. No storage expansion. It's a fanboys only item.

Nintendo suck at it too but overall they tap into their legacy quite a bit even if they rarely choose the most viable option. Sony just doesn't bother at all anymore.

Doesn't PS5 have PS now? I'm pretty sure most Sony exclusives from ps3 and ps2 remasters are there.

100% Backwards compatibility should be a priority by next gen. Whether it digital or physical. If it isn't then both Nintendo and Sony are fucking up big time. MS is on the right track.

Ill never understand Sonys fascination with killing mostly beloved IPs. Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Syphon Filter, Killzone, Ape Escape, LBP and so on. At least Uncharted called it quits before it got stale. I'm surprised they didn't kill God of War after Ascension.

Guess it's just easier to pay for exclusivity rights to force people to buy third-party titles on PS5, which I'm not looking forward to because I vastly prefer playing on Xbox for the UI and controller.

I'm fine with moving on from franchises if they're done with them. It makes total sense to me that Killzone and Twisted Metal are dead.

But c'mon at least make collections of them available to at least see if people still care and to experience some of their legacy and older titles. It can't just be robots cosplaying in a pack-in game.

And the point I was getting at with killing IPs is that if they're done with them, then releasing collections feel like dead-end routes. Who'd want to play the Sly collection if Sly 5 is nowhere on the horizon? In comparison, Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection could convince people to get Uncharted 4 or Lost Legacy, at least I can see Sony thinking like that.

Doesn't help that Sony ponies are brainwashed into thinking that "new console should only play new games"

I totally agree with what you're saying here in a general sense, but some of the legacy issues are solved if you use PS Now to play the games. I used PS Now to play through the whole God of War series a few months ago, and I'm sure a few of those titles you mentioned are missing can be played with PS Now.

Still, it is pretty sad the way they neglect their legacy titles, it's pretty counterintuitive to have to use a streaming service (which even with a good stable internet connection gives me problems here and there) to play those past games.

PlayStation Now isn't in my region so not an option for everyone. Streaming means one day those games will be gone too.

I think we will eventually see a sub service of HD versions of old games and I think Sony will probably do it first cuz they cant easily port their PS3 games.

It truly baffles me with the PS5 just how terrible the cross-platform saves are handled. Having to start up a game on PS4 to then manually upload the save to the cloud, to then be able to play it on your PS5 is one of the clunkiest ways to handle it.

And yet, people gotta have that PS5 for... Demons Souls?

Backwards compatability is dumb and holds back development of new ideas. There's been so many remasters since 360 and ps3. You can get a console with legacy games for 50 bucks. Or just keep your older ones and games like a sane person.

Either you're talking about systems that aren't designed for HD televisions or you're talking about a system that's going to have all of its online services shut down in the near future.

Notice how I haven't even limited it to backwards compatibility in this topic. I'm talking about PlayStation's legacy in general. They just suck at it. More than the other two.

You know which of my old games is affected by a shut down of online services? FFXI for PS2, but SE cut support for it years ago. Everything else works just fine. In fact, ME3 would benefit from lack of online, since I need to log out of PSN before launching it, otherwise it just hangs. My PS2 and Dreamcast games don't bother me on an HD tv.

It's frustrating because the only reason it's like this is because game companies don't care and don't think about the future.

Piracy is the easiest and best way to play through old video games and it shouldn't be like that. No other medium is this bad.
