Kingdom Hearts 1. There are prequels but honestly it's best to just go through it chronologically from release date. The All in One package should help I think Idk

KH 1.5 has KH1, Chain of Memories and cutscenes of 358/2 Days, start there.
KH 2.5 has KH2, Birth By Sleep, and the cutscenes of Coded, that's next
KH 2.8 has Dream Drop Distance, 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage, and some third movie I dont' remember the name of, that's third.
KH 3 + DLC is last

If you get the All In One package, just go from top to bottom on the main menu with all the games.

The only exception is playing KH2 before 358/2 Days.

2 had a fairly Good story, cohesive and complete story in my opinion and could have ended there if not for the secret ending.

Birth by sleep though is honestly where the story jumped the shark in my opinion. Doing hurdles from it, dream drop distance, and finally KH3.

From what I remember of watching my wife play them while I was doing chemo, the gameplay was kind of lame and boring, the story somewhat interesting but convoluted in a way that makes Xenogears seem simple, with awesome music.

The story in 2 was decent but as Solid Snake07 said, that's when it starts jumping the shark.

The story in 1 was simple disney fantasy fare and they did a decent job of sprinkling the final fantasy characters in.

I mean, 1 was as simple as you can get. Look for King Mickey/Riku/Kairi, look for/rescue disney princesses, cool cameos/teamups with beloved disney/ff characters, lots of talk about heart and light and dark. Not really much madness to it. When they started introducing Org 13 and the concept of nobodies and whatnot was when it got to the madness.

I feel its DDD that introduces the complexity. Other than the reasoning for how the enemies are created I dont think Birth by Sleep is really that confusing

It became more complex starting with CoM/KH2 introducing things like Nobodies and stuff, but it still had pretty consistent themes and story arcs they tried to adhere to. Nothing was too hard to follow or understand.

But DDD was really the first time they just went balls to the wall with crazy shit, and all the new games afterwards folllowed suit.

It's barely even a "story" anymore, just a nonstop string of random plot points and mysteries they throw out in order to goad you into buying more products, with no actual end in sight. And the diehard fans eat the shit out of it.

I mean...this was explained in KH1 itself... We see him possessing Riku and then introducing himself as Ansem. He even repeats the exact same dialogue that he said in the beginning of the game, and has the same voice.

DDD acts like we never knew, for some reason.
