The animation is the best thing about the show, I agree. I will admit Nezuko's design is memorable and potentially cute depending on the eye of the beholder. Most of the characters are just archetypes, largely turned up to obnoxious levels. The plot moves at a typical Shonen pace, which would have been fine if the characters were at least enjoyable enough to care what happens to them. And then there's the secret hunter society that appears to be structured and modeled heavily off of the Soul Society captains in Bleach, outright, rather than just borrowing a related trope.

I also gave up on Demon Hunter. <_<

See, animes are to manga or light novels what a lot of our cartoons are to lines of toys, by which I mean one is used to sell the other. Just like the first two or three episodes of a show might sell me on the whole thing, I'd only be interested in the manga if the show got me invested; it hasn't.

I've only read the manga so far and, while the art is often great, the character designs vary greatly in quality, the writing (although part of it is scanlation) is sketchy, the pacing has problems, and the overall story is... meh.

On a thematic level, it feels like the series was just trying to chase trends. Not that it necessarily matters, because the series is sold more on its style than substance and the fact that it leans so heavily into proven concepts probably helped it.

I still need to get back to it at some point. I left off on the chapter where the Love Pillar was fighting old man moon's fake body

Oh, and for the longest time I thought the Mist Pillar was a girl. I guess the gender is probably more clear from the get-go in the anime where you hear him talk, whereas he's very femine-looking in the manga.

I tried watching Jojo back when it started getting super popular and I thought it was terrible too, so much dumb shit happens just for the sake of dumb shit. It did have some pretty great jokes though I'll give it that.

It's only popular because 1) it's really shiny, especially in combat scenes when said combat is actually happening rather than shonen-style exposition dumping is being had, and 2) adorable (demon) girl in a box syndrome.

Even the Netflix release would show that it is/was popular though, no? At least in Korea it's been in the top popularity slot since it released. I almost exclusively re-watch anime on Netflix though so I have no idea how popular an actual new/unseen by me release would seem if I were seeing it there for the first time.

If you read the manga and enjoyed it at all you'd be missing out by not watching the anime. The combat is just about the peak of modern animation. The TV series is about the level of most full budget animated movies and the movie is the highest grossing Japanese film of all time for a reason.

I'll have to see how I feel after finishing the manga. Early on, my reaction was, "Wow, this is great," but after a few chapters it was already starting to lose its shine. By the time they introduce the villain (who's just a big bundle of meh) and fight his two henchmen, I was already starting to check out and that feeling has only grown when they started to have arcs that basically consisted of a single fight or two. (And, of course, both the remaining moons (especially given that they kill off 4 of the lower moons during their first appearance) and the Pillars have been a letdown.)

If I watch it, it'll mostly be for the animation.
