I don't have a Dreamcast, I'm as unbiased as you can possibly get

I played Shemmue for the first time on the PS4 and liked it so much I played 1 + 2 back to back and had a lot of fun

I tried to play Yakuza and got so utterly overwhelmingly bored that I had to give up.

I'm sure Yakuza has more live action porn stars and guys with underpants on their head and girls with DD boobs jumping out of windows while on fire for your entertainment but it just doesn't have any pacing, worldbuilding or atmosphere whatsoever.

For all the memes and it's janky ass design, Oblivion is baller.

Elder Scrolls is unironically a top tier RPG series, despite ( and partly because) being such a mess.

Morrowind is dated and kinda shitty but Oblivion and Skyrim unironically hold up

I tried 2 different ones, I forget which. I think 5 was one of them and then everyone said "Nonono, start with [other one]" so I tried that it was exactly the same.

Both you run around dull streets as a man in a suit getting into "wacky" fights with thugs where you beat them up with tables and bicycles followed by 20 minute conversations about random bollocks even the characters involved didn't seem to care about.

I couldn't get into it. I didn't even get why it was a Sandbox, there didn't seem to be anything to do between destinations.

Sleeping Dogs is way better.

IT seems to be designed for people who don't care about pacing or atmosphere who like dumb silly things but also want them to be slow and uninteresting.

Which is fine but Shenmue was so much better is pretty much everyway. Even visuals, sure graphics are worse but Shenmue had strong art direction

Shenmue was revolutionary, no doubt. Without it we don't have any of the games that came after in the quality that they were. It was like MGS level important without the follow up and with bad voice acting.

I played it for the first time with the remasters and I found it pretty good even in 2018 or whatever year they came out in. The atmosphere was indeed pretty good in the games and held up.

I never had a Dreamcast
I played it on the PS4 for the first time

I thought it was great

I fully get that it requires patience though and a lot of people don't want that from their magical smiles machine. I mean you can complete Doom in the time it takes Ryo to wake up, get up, go into town, get the bus and talk to his chums

When I was like 16 and had a Dreamcast, I was all about Shenmue, and played them both, and was shit talking all my N64 friends about what they were missing out on.

I tried Shenmue again when it came out on Game Pass a couple years ago and it's just awful now. I'd rather a Seaman remaster tbh. Yakuza and any Elder Scrolls game is 10X as entertaining and deep.
