I'm not usually super-open about stuff like this, but I honestly don't know what to do.

I'm trying to learn javascript, but it's just... really difficult to keep my mind from wandering. I have to keep going back and re-reading the last ten lines I JUST read because I keep not comprehending them, and I find myself skimming. Either that, or I'll be watching a video on developer stuff and I'll realize I just zoned out for a whole chunk of the video.

what can I do? Does anyone have any tricks to keeping focused?

ugh, the struggle. i have been running code through my brain for a month now and still haven't found the willpower to actually do anything for real.

sorry, i don't have any suggestions, but you have all my sympathies.

I have had ADHD my entire life and I'm trying to code a game in C++

I lose focus constantly and there are long lapses in progress because I get distracted by other projects. It's been a struggle that is often times frustrating. Caffeine helps, I could see why people like John Carmac could drink can after can of diet coke during long coding binges. It's a double-edge though and I often find that I lose focus after too long. I think the problem for me is sitting still for long periods of time.

I think the fact that there are plenty of resources online for the engine I'm using has at least given me hope to keep pushing. YouTube videos and tutorials have made coding concepts easy to digest and even inspired me to try new methods of accomplish my means.

Because I love games I am passionate about learning how to create them. I would have no desire to learn how to code if it weren't for how badly I want to contribute to something that has given me so much throughout the years. You kind of have to become obsessive at times. Once you realize how much work actually goes into the process, you understand that only a crazy person would actually want to do it.

personal experience, it works with benadryl, too. it's amazing how i'm at my most focused for the hour or so between the drugs starting to work and them successfully denying me consciousness.

fullfuckingstop: i do not in any way condone abusing drugs for code. but if code happens while using (legal!) drugs for their intended purpose... win/win?

Elegant code is not quite in my wheel house. My code is chunky and inconsistent in some of my projects since I'm trying different methods of achieving things as I go. It's probably clunkier than it needs to be but guess what? It works. Nobody needs to know how the sausage is made.
