That makes sense, given that there's a ton of story left and to cram it all into one last book would be an editing nightmare.

Pretty sure there'd need to be a book 3 first >_>

At least Rothfuss said he wants to publish more because publishing makes him happy.

And George Martin keeps saying he's almost finished with the next Song of Ice and Fire book, but no one believes him either.

Even Rothfuss' publisher has said they don't think he's written a single word since 2015.

I've tried with rothfuss. Read about 3/4 of the first book and I just kept waiting for the good part and it never came.

Kind of misleading headline. I saw this podcast awhile back, he seems to be referring to more books in the world, not necessarily a continuation of the current story.

I totally forgot about this series. I remember loving the first two books, but the third one never came. I tried to read them again and didn't enjoy it nearly as much. The dialogue was a little too, idk, YA for me. A little bit cringe.

I thought he dropped the series? I remember reading the first and then I think there was a long delay and I never came back for the second.

About four years, on the long side but not awful. Though it's been a decade since he published the 2nd book.

Ah 4 years was long enough for me to forget, also I think I had gotten into manga at that point and wasn't reading as many actual books.

It was basically his Mary Sue author self-insert being utterly awesome and kewl 100% of the time.

He doesn't need to write book 3 now because he mostly fulfills his need for self-insert adventures playing D&D with the Penny Arcade guys now.

Not to mention that enough time has passed where the hype is insurmountable. The third book will go one of two ways - A) not live up to the hype, expectations, and close all loose ends or B) do well and everyone will enjoy it.

Given that there's been little to no updates, I'm banking on the first option. It sucks, but it's the most likely.

I had hopes that in the third book he was going to subvert the Mary Sue character he had set-up. It's mostly a first person narrative, so the whole point could be to create an annoyingly full of themself unreliable narrator. But considering the content we have, the only conclusion we can draw is that it IS probably a self insert. Especially with that stupidly long sex scene with Fleurian or whatever her name is in the second book, that is almost immediately followed by another elongated and weird author sex fantasy insert, this time with his Adem teacher.

Also, OP isn't news. Patrick Rothfuss has stated in the past (years ago) that he's "tricked" us into reading what amounts to a giant prologue in a much more massive tale. He's always had plans to continue the story after the third book. Those plans coming to fruition seems increasingly more unlikely as the years pass and he continues not to publish anything, but he's not GRRM old yet so who knows. Maybe he'll pull out of his slump and hit a hot streak in writing.
