It was a really good reboot game, and visually spectacular. Literally looks like a CGI movie.

It's free on PS4, too. I was kind of blown away by it. I'm not a big fan of those kinds of games but my girlfriend is, and I was just kinda stunned at the production value.

To be fair, Insomniac is one of the best developers ever. Even their weaker titles, like Sunset Overdrive, were pretty good.

Is it the first original game right down to the original controls? Does it have the combat additions (strafe, etc) up to at least R&C2? The controls for the first game were limited and rigid as fuck. No makeover alone would make that fun by today's standards.

No, it's a complete remake of the original game. None of the mechanics are the same.

It's got completely modern third person shooting mechanics, unlike the original.

It is basically a reboot of the first game. It is brand spanking new in the engine and combat and does not feel like a rehashed 2004 game.

My theory is that it's actually in an alternate universe from the original series.

The whole concept of Rift Apart is that there are a ton of parallel dimensions, and you get a device that lets you rip between them.

That's good to hear.

My first game in the series was actually Ratchet & Clank 3. It got me hooked into checking out the other 2 at the time. The jump back to R&C2 was barely noticeable, but R&C1 was aggravating by comparison with the barebones combat scheme. I get it was the first title before the control revamps happened, but I could not bring myself to play through it like that again. The revamps were needed...

The story was great; the controls just needed the updates. Glad to hear the devs paid attention to that.

I think its part alternate universe and part a retelling of the story from a different point of view. The opening sequence of the game explains it a bit better. Spoilers ahead:

Its the story told from Quarks POV while hes in prison.

That one is going to get a $60 definitive edition release, bank on it.

Thanks to the law of diminishing returns, any last generation title above 1080p that gets a bump to 60 frames per second tends to look indistinguishable from a current gen title.
