Read the first 2 in high school then the rest of the series few years later. A spin-off too, definitely my favorite book series. Too bad the movie was horrendous, an HBO or Netflix adaptation would be amazing.

I actually kind of enjoyed the Elba-Mcconaughey film, even though as an adaptation it was terrible. It would be awesome if one of the streamers made a series, I agree.

Nice. Some general thoughts about the first 2 books off the top of my head:

Man, Stephen King can really write an action sequence. Particularly in the first book right at the start when he fights off and slaughters the town of crazy people, that was mindblowing to me. I dont think Ive ever read a better action scene; it felt like I was there.

In The Drawing of the Three I really could not stand the sections written from Dettas point of view. Everything being said and just the way sentences were structured was so vile, it honestly made me feel gross every time we came back to her. Hated reading those parts. The remarkable thing though is that King managed to somehow bring it together in the end when her personalities did the fusion dance. I thought it was a beautiful finish to her characters arcs and a really nice ending that made going through all those Detta passages feel worth it.

If you enjoyed that sequence from the first book there are several more coming up in series that you will enjoy. My personal favorite is a scene in book 4, towards the end.

Honestly I'm with you on the Detta chapters, Even on the subsequent read throughs that I do every so often I still hate them, 25 years or so after I read it the first time. Part of that is King's ability to write from the perspective of genuinely vile characters and make you feel disgusting from seeing their perspective.

@a-c-a-b Don't read this Shab until you've finished The Wastelands one of my absolute favorite moments of he series is when Roland just fucking verbally tears down Blaine. It's so genuinely ridiculous the idea of Roland standing there hand on his gun essentially motherfucking a train. It's written with such gravitas though that you can't help but love it.

Don't ask him silly questions, he won't play silly games

Speaking of which, I've actually got a copy of Charlie The Choo-Choo from when they put it on sale a few years ago. The art is every bit as horrifying as you'd imagine from reading the main books.

@Shablagoo Which version of The Gunslinger did you read? The original version or the rerelease he did after he finished the series?

Agreed, Wastelands is probably the best of the series. Or at least most memorable.

I dont have it with me so I cant say for sure. It was large, like as big as a comic book (length x width I mean, not thickness), and had full page illustrations. I wanna say it was old, like older than my copy of the third book which I see was published first in 1991, but Im not sure. What are the differences between the versions?

This punchline and the passage leading up to it early in The Wastelands had me cracking up:

Well, the drunk had gotten all of Gloria Dean, holy cow, seeya later.

utterly and its totally tragic because I was obsessed with the first four books. Book six and book seven are the most unimaginable train wreck of lame payoffs and stupid decisions ever, its like a reverse sanderlanche where everything terrible just starts happening at the finish line

I pray god will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in truth
