In my job I've been tasked with making video instructional videos and their expectations are completely wild. "can you do 5, 5-minute videos a week?"

You want me to script, voice over, record and edit 10 minutes of footage every goddamn week? Even if I didn't already have an actual job I'd be lucky to push out 2 a week.

And probably because I'm a bit of a snowflake but I can't take the fucking criticism sometimes. "That transition at the 2.13 mark was a little shoddy. Alright Sandra, I'm not a professional and this took me 4 fucking hours" is what I want to say sometimes

Props to professional videographers man, that shit is hard

I've done some video editing and that shit takes so much time, I agree. No wonder a lot of them hire editors. Imagine manning a large channel by yourself. Seems nightmareish.

The vast majority of YouTube videos are edited so poorly, though. YouTube has made kids (and some adults) think endless jump cuts are okay.

I only watch a couple of channels regularly, and they tend to be very minimal with cuts and other editing, but it does look exhausting to have to keep up with a constant production schedule week after week. You even see these people having to plan their videos around other things in their lives, like if they want to take a vacation they have to make extra videos before they leave so they aren't going a whole week with no uploads. That sort of thing.

I had no idea how time consuming it is just to get things to line up neatly and not have jarring scene transitions every 5 seconds. And audio. How the fuck do you get clean audio? I have a good mic and a quiet room, but so much as the upstairs neighbour shutting their door gets picked up and is audible on the final production. I have much to learn.

Usually clean audio you can get by sound-proofing the room, and then any droning noise that may get picked up from active electronics and the PC gets put through a high pass filter/noise reduction.

clean audio is simple get some foam panels to line the walls in your recording area. edit out random noises in your recording software. also, there are good mics and then goood mics. blue yeti is a good mic but if I'm a pro youtuber or musician it's not good enough.

Just about every makeup tutorial, video game review, etc. where its someone sitting in front of a camera is riddled with jump cuts. Not sure where you came up with this theory.

The bigger YouTube commentators do talk about putting in actual workday hours though in making their videos. But it can be difficult to tell how much of that time is put into just researching topics.

I imagine it's done because there's a lot of dead air and "umms" between things they want to say.

In which case that should probably be something they should work on.

This is exactly why it happens in their video, and you are right. The most simple fix is use a multi camera setup, with at least one extra camera you can easily fix this problem.

Audio programs have a feature specifically for that since it's a common issue

You can run it through an audio program like Logic and isolate sounds you want to lower or eliminate altogether.

Look for a setting called noise reducer in the program you are using. If it doesnt have one, Audacity might be able to do it, its free.

It's not easy. Me and 2 friends have done it for 2 years in Let's Plays. I eventually started paying one of my friends to edit mine. Editing stinks.

This is funny because my company did the same thing after I made some instructional videos for our new employees. And I had to tell my bosses boss that if you want something of that kind of production quality you have to hire an actual production company we cant make million dollar looking videos with camTasia

I feel like most youtubers hire an editor once they can spare the cash.

And then there's dudes like penguinz0 who's videos have no editing most of the time besides just cutting some snippets out.
