The very purpose of a union is collective bargaining to prevent abuse by an employer.

Since both sectors are federally employed, you could argue that is the federal government has/had the mechanisms to properly compensate those respective industries. You shouldn't require federal protections from your employer when your employer IS the government(hypothetically)

You would have to provide respective scales of compensation/raises prior to anything being abolished, as well as ensuring that the required protections for federal employees are codified into law, but if those standards were met would you be willing to sacrifice teacher's unions to get rid of the police unions under the pretense of doing away with unions for most public sector jobs?

I'm genuinely curious if such a thing would be palatable to people.

I would, but there'd need to be something put in place to compensate their wages to put it where it SHOULD be: Teachers should get paid the same as doctors. They should have the same respect, means, and educational scrutiny that doctors have and it should be compensated accordingly.

Counterpoint; could it really get much worse? If significant reform accompanied the removal of the union and ensured percentage based raises on an annual basis wouldn't most teachers already find that arrangement preferable to what they frequently have to fight tooth and nail for?

No. But I'd still be in favor of getting rid of police unions.

yes, teachers would be happier if they did not need a union and the government gave them what they deserved without having to fight for it. how is this a counterpoint? the reason why the union has to fight so hard is that the government does everything they can to not give them anything,
