I used to hate hate HATE baroque music, but she kept telling me to listen to the genius of Bach's brilliant use of point/counterpoint and his incredible dual-harmonizations and with that knowledge, I have finally come to the realization that Bach was a fucking unparalleled genius, especially for his era.

I thought you always liked Bach?

I only remember because you were shitting on Vivaldi for some reason

I hate baroque. And everything in it. Last year, she engaged in a quest to convince me that Bach was a genius, and only recently have I finally accepted that fact.

To quote my wife: "Bach is like music math. Bach is the Isaac Newton of modern music."

Huh, must be confusing you with somebody else I had that convo with.

Either way, yeah Bach rules

We might have been talking about it back when she was pestering me so much about it, and for a while I was kind of waxing and waning.

His piano inventions are a great entry point. Also the Brandenburg concertos. Take a deep dive into his organ works if you dare but its a labyrinth. I was force fed Bach as a kid. Im still convinced Handel is much better to the casual listener.

What kind of composer can take a piano warm up piece, made up mostly of arpeggios in different key signatures, and make it that beautiful?

You know, I actually don't particularly mind Handel so much compared to most baroque composers, but I think partly it's because his music has elements of what would later become much more common in classical.

Bach, interestingly enough, seems much more in line with Beethoven and the romance era. Which is kind of weird to think about.

Now that I know more about Bach, it's kind of weird to hear how his music was far more influential on Beethoven's style than Mozart's was.
