I'm sure it's just the light that is malfunctioning. Happens all the time. i would ignore and just go off the assumption that the light is malfunctioning. That will be fine

If it's a "maintenance needed" rather than a check engine light, you should be able to reset it yourself.

IIRC that's just an oil change reminder, at least it is in my car.

You can manually disable it

I thought they were the same thing, didn't know there was a difference between the two

Maintenance just mean something probably needs to be serviced. CEL means there is something potentially wrong with your engine. Both can come on due to a faulty fuse or sensor.

Or you could take 15 minutes and fix it yourself

I don't know why people even take their cars to a mechanic, cars aren't that hard to fix

They're two separate lights on at least my Toyota. The actual classic check engine light is a picture of what seems to be an engine. Also there's a manual way to reset it without an OBD reader.

My 1994 Ford Explorer's light was on for like 13 years when I drove it and God knows how long before that.

Advance Auto or Autozone will hook the scanner up to your car and give you a print out of the error code for free. Then you can google what needs to be fixed. Helped when I needed to replace a brake light senor. Once I knew the issue, I bought it on Amazon for $12, pulled up a Youtube tutorial, and replaced it myself.

They didn't give me any sort of advice. They plugged the handheld to my car, printed the read out with error codes, and walked away.
