I did because I was having a hard time in Phoenix. So I moved to Pearl City to stay with my Brother and his roomates (all Army).

Got my GED, worked at the airport. I joined the Army after a year and a half because they were going to be moving on and I couldnt even save enough up for a plane ticket state side.

I would never move back unless I was retired or rich. Great place to spend a vacation still though.

Youve clearly never been to Hawaii. I love it there, just not enough to move there. My uncle moved there for iron work and made a damn good living. He lives in Toronto now but his time in Hawaii paid for his pretty nice house in Toronto

Are you sure you don't mean roaches? We have those big American roaches like basically everywhere else, but I've never seen a waterbug/Oriental cockroach in over 32 years of living here. Also, mosquitos can be a problem in the damper places like Manoa. Centipedes are rare though; they usually keep to themselves.

Internet speed is fine; it's the distance to other people that can make online gaming a pain. I have 500 mb fiber optic from Hawaiian Telcom, but they go up to 1 gig. Not sure about the other providers.

And yes, I will punch you in the face if you dare to even step foot on my beach.

Anyway, as to why you would want to live here:

  • Best water in the country, hands down. Filtered through volcanic rock for 25 years before it even hits the filtration plant means there are very little chemicals added. It tastes exquisite. I always hate visiting the mainland (especially my aunt in California) because the water up there is chlorinated and tastes like balls.
  • Beautiful weather and scenery should go without saying
  • Great cops. I pass dozens everyday and they'll always give me a friendly smile and nod and/or hello. I don't recall ever seeing one of those stories that you see on the news so often about a racist cop killing someone.
  • Friendly locals.
  • Our bus system is great.
  • Tons of exotic food because there are so many ethnicities. McDonald's also has some stuff that I don't think is available elsewhere, like the McTeri, saimin, and various spam platters.
  • HOT ASIAN CHICKS :3

But of course there are downsides like the insane cost of living and large number of homeless. But I wouldn't live anywhere else because of that last reason up there :3

Actually wait, no. I would live in Japan if I could because of that. Also they have far fewer hobos. In the 10 days I visited, I saw only one homeless dude, and he was throwing away a can on the ground. And also they have heated toilet seats, even in the malls. And the food at their 7-11s and other convenience stores is awesome and cheap. I miss Japan :<

I was born in Hawaii but I can't afford to live there. My Dad is retired Navy and he has basically 'members only' access to some pf the perks of Oahu including the exchange (military wal-marts) on the island and some cheap hotels and when we go back there we draw on that life-line along with his ability to get us into Bellows or the Hale Koa but ..... its a small island.

I'm a software engineer. There isn't a ton of work out there compared to where I am now (Denver) or other hot spots. Though Denver has exploded to the point where its gone from affordable to being San Francisco Lite during covid there just aren't jobs over there outside of tourism and random bullshit for plebs.

Oh, we're pretty similar. Yeah, my parents have DOD clearance for the Commissary. I know only cardholders can actually go inside the store. For me, I had an RN license, but the recession just ruined the market. Luckily, I've been flourishing back here in California.

It feels weirder for me because I was actually in the Army for four years. I deployed to Iraq and then Afghanistan but at 30+ years old I've been on vacations where I'm basically waiting on my old Dad to finish shopping at the Exchange so we can all check out using his ID or my Mom's dependent ID at the exchange under the Hale Koa on Waikiki because Veterans that just did a few years in the military don't count.

There is an exception for people that are disabled during the military service but for most people that serve in the military you have to do 20 years to get things like base access or access to the commissary or PX/BX/whatever the fuck X.

Okay, wait. You better get your quarantine exemption shit straight before you leave. We get so many calls at the office from people who dont understand how to fill out the form and whatnot, then they get pissed when we tell them to email us because theres no phone support (and that no one in our office handles the exemptions). Whats worse is that tons of those asswipes waited to the last minute and are like But my flight is this afternoon! What am I supposed to do?!. I seriously want to tell them Maybe get your shit in order more than a few hours in advance?.

This is a common misunderstanding. Only tourists who are inconsiderate assholes who disobey the rules and such. There are idiots who ignore signs telling them to stay out of places natives consider sacred or pick flowers from places theyre not supposed to and that earns them the ire of locals.

Obey the rules and youll be fine.

I feel like that's the same as any place that gets a lot of tourists. God knows I've seen some pretty hostile confrontations here with dickheads from Alberta or the coast.

I guess that was your point though. Hahaha.

I think Hawaii gets a bad rap for that partly cause of movies where surfers aggressively try to take ownership of specific spots.
