Take this board for example, if someone says this people freak out on them and say something like "well the important thing is that you found a way to feel superior to others"

Why do you think people get so defensive and immediately lash out? If they are those people who use it as a veil for their extreme right wing views I get it, but it seems like people lose their shit on any and everyone who dares to claim they're an independent voter.

Because it should be plainly fucking obvious that everyone aside from gun and abortion nuts have nuanced views and don't wholly agree with a single platform as opposed to another. People who constantly need to say "both sides" or that they're centrist just look like the biggest fucking idiots to normal people, because no shit.

Because the two party system bundled with fptp makes everyone psychotic and treat politics like sports and have a "either with us or with them" mentality to the point even mild criticism of their "side" will be met with vicious accusations.

I'm normally not a fan of the lesser of two evils mentality but it absolutely applied here in the 2020 election.

Surges of hate crimes & violence, botched pandemic response and that still wasn't enough for some people

Well put it this way. What use is saying you're independent?

Not much apart from bragging, or perhaps you're under the odd assumption that the majority of this country is dogmatically beholden to one of the two major parties.

I'd imagine it's the same use as people who claim they are Republican or Democrat. It's just a view some people hold, I'm not sure why there has to be any more use than that. It's just really cringy seeing people get personally attacked over it.

That doesn't hold water though because people have been flipping out on independent voters long before Trump took office.

I'm "independent" in Canada because I have multiple political parties to choose from and thus no single party has my loyalty on the federal level.

When it comes to America with a two-party system, I can't see how someone can be the on the fence. One party supports Trump and Trump policies, the Democrats do not. I'd easily be a Democrat lol.

People would rather you firmly pick a side. Which in American politics has never made sense in my lifetime. Too many viewpoints get divvied up into polar opposite camps with the GOP and Democrats.

But how many people even do that?

It's just a view some people hold
"Democrat" is not a "view". It's a political party. Views are multifaceted and different for every person.

"Democrat" can be interpreted to be as reference to their party's platform, but that's more a series of goals that a bunch of people in charge of said party have agreed to seek.

At the end of the day, declaring oneself independent doesn't tell you anything of substance about the person. I've only ever really see anyone declare themselves independent (or moderate, or centrist) in cases where they wished to hold themselves in higher esteem over those they view suckered in by the political parties, regardless of whether that's honestly true or not.

It reminds me of when girls like video games or some other hobby and guys relentlessly question them to see if they can pass some made-up test in their head but never do with guys who like those hobbies. It just comes off it's really weird, like what are you looking for?

Never saw it on a relevant scale before Trump.

Exactly, people get so angry over single issue voters while flipping out on people who do the opposite as well.
