@Tyranthraxus

You seem to hold the opinion that dishonesty is immoral. Therefore I must ask you this question:

Why is dishonesty immoral?
Dishonesty is not always immoral. Neither is stealing. There's always circumstances where I'd consider both of them to be morally appropriate. Video games usually doesn't qualify however.

Sure. Feels free to copy / paste the whole thing in case someone asks "How?"
Okay, great. Then lets imagine a scenario:

There are 100 poor people in a town who need insulin to survive. Recently, the price of insulin that those 100 people can access has been jacked up 10,000%, and those 100 people can no longer afford it. There is a surplus of insulin available. A vigilante - let's call them "Robin Hood", decides to steal several months worth of insulin from a facility and distributes it to those 100 people.

Is that act of theft, in and of itself, immoral?

EDIT: The post above me clarified that you think theft is only conditionally immoral.

That is not correct. When you pay the creator, you make an agreement to not copy the game. You do not make an agreement to never lend out the game. Making a copy is breaking your promise / agreement, deception, and theft. It is immoral and disrespectful.

This is functionally equivalent to cheating on your spouse but then saying "eh they have no way of ever finding out so it's okay"

No it's still immoral even if your spouse never finds out.
You're conflating legality and morality. When I purchase a product the implied agreement is based on legality, not respect. You can buy a product and set it on fire. Entirely disrespectful to the creator but I wouldn't call it immoral.

A romantic relationship is the one based on respect instead of legality. It's not illegal to cheat on your partner, but definitely disrespectfuland immoral.

Let's not pretend these two types of 'agreements' are morally comparable.

No that is in my opinion justified theft. I also placing the burden of necessities on people who need those necessities to be immoral. It does not need to be free, of course, but no one should have to struggle with how they will be able to get their life saving medication. Similar arguments to be made for food and water.

Of course if "Robin Hood" decided to sell at "only a 200%" markup that would be immoral.

Im curious what the moral argument is for people that bring up the preservation thing or the right to experience it thing. Seems a stretch when applied to a piece of entertainment.

You're reducing art and culture to disposable entertainment. They have a different view on it to you

I didnt read the topic but I guess it just depends on whether or not you live by the principle of things

This is to say your moral reasoning comes in part from suspending logic for the sake of some good that you believe in because otherwise theres no reason to fret over cyber 0s and 1s in world where you can continually argue if its wrong or it is right

None of which existed on a bigger scale back in the late 80s, early 90s. People don't seem to get this. Funimation only started existing in 94. Prior to that, the majority of anime related items were imported from Japan, and even then it was very rarely seen. We didn't have the internet like we do now where its all over the place.

Happyconsolegamer did a great video on this, mentioning that finding anime related shows was near impossible prior to shows like Sailor Moon being dubbed, and even then it wasn't an episode a week like it is now.

I'll mention YTV here in Canada, specifically Dragonball Z and Dragonball. We only got maybe 1/4 of the entire show of Dragonball due to waiting for it to be translated, and then it was just dropped for Dragonball Z. Dragonball Z, we had the first 2 seasons up until the Frieza fight which didn't even start, as they didn't have the fight episodes shipped to them so they could translate. Instead, they would restart the entire show over and over again, at least a dozen times.

People were able to see these episodes because of piracy. Programs like Napster and Limewire became extremely popular when they launched because they were able to see shows they had never heard about before, and it was a lot easier than finding that one random store that had a single episode of Inuyasha or Bubblegum Crisis.

Anime piracy / fansubbing in the 80s and 90s helped identify the market in America and what might be profitable here.

Something similar happened with msdos games which is how GOG identified a demand for a legal market.

Digital media would literally stop existing if everyone decided to "make a free copy of it" instead of paying. Most people aren't going to buy it later if they like it or whatever excuse we want to make.

I'm pretty sure it was made because people get butt hurt when they're told what they're doing is wrong and they do whatever they can to convince others and themselves that they're in the right.

Meanwhile actual pirates happily carry on since they know they're wrong and don't give a shit and revel in the fact that they do so. But whatever you wanna tell yourself mang.

So pirating has been proven to increase sales in some cases since this whole market would not have existed without it.

In certain extremely specific and narrow cases piracy's net effect on sales is still completely irrelevant to whether it is moral or not.

It's a question of morality and there's people who reason on different levels. You see the same people running in circles explaining basic ideas while others talk above them discussing more in depth ideas. The first group never reaches the level of reasoning of the second, so they just keep repeating what is obvious to them.
I think this is Piaget's moral reasoning or something related to it.
