Ya'll are thinking of racism as something that's handed down, like a tradition, something that's personal, but it's also the entire system. Racism (and sexism and everything else) is baked into the fabric and structures of our society, a society built and shaped by generations upon generations of racists. The system perpetuates and propogates racism even without anyone having to go out of their way to *be* racist(though that never helps, of course). It's what has always been and it's what is.
That's why it's so hard to dismantle: because it's so pervasive, and most of it isn't obvious to privileged observers.

Pretty sure racism has roots deeper than societal.

That's not what I'm saying at all though. I'm just stating the fact that structural racism is a thing that exists right now. Society and the many types of pressures it exerts is an extremely powerful force that shapes every aspect of how we think and act.

If you want to be blunt, racism is born out of humanities core tribalism. We're innately tribal people and people that we see as not part of our tribe are outsiders, ne'er-do-wells, up to no good, etc.

Its something that we can engage in without even thinking.

Now you can argue that as educated people we can and should strive to be better than our base instincts but a lot of people never reach that point or are intentionally suppressed to not reach that point.

Its a sad affair but if we don't understand why people are racist, we will never get them to not be racist

It's passed through the generations often.

Sometimes it's just a bitter/poor/whatever person radicalized by "news" organizations or hate groups.

There are religious reasobs sometimes as well. War/conflict between regions/countries often brings about racism. World War 2 brought out a lot of Anti Japanese/Asian Racism in America.

Yeah, it's more to do with institutional racism now. Many people don't really believe in inferior intelligence between races now, and probably view intelligence to be subjective. But now, there's the idea of thinking certain obvious problems affecting people of color today either aren't important or outright don't exist, just by comparison of things being worse 50+ years ago.

It's the foundation of the "All Lives Matter" mentality. They choose to believe that "oh, things are fine for your people now, just be nice to everyone!", when that clearly does not work. And when soneone tries to speak out against it, that goes against what they've convinced themselves of. It's an ignorant disregard for the very clear bad shit that's still happening.

It's always a comment about ghettos with racism towards black people.. Some ignorant shit about assuming they're just born that way. The more common version is the "good ones" and "bad ones". All still ignorant of how systemic racism perpetuated by the government created rampant poverty within black communities.

Latinos it's all about taking jobs and I honestly don't hear much outside of that.

Middle Easterners and terrorism..

omfgggg

people who can't handle any criticism of their race, and parents who teach kids that, are a huge part of why there's still racism

some dumb fucks think it's okay to be racist because the world is just now starting to dig in to a lot of bad shit white people did

although, as a very sturdy white person, my guess is that the fragile ones just have their racism and perceived racial superiority as a fundamental pillar of their identity... otherwise such discussions shouldn't instill any fragility

Why the attitude?

I'm as dark skinned as it gets, and this question reeks as badly as someone who asks "where do modern black/latino/native american people draw their racism from?"

Probably the same place as racist people that are people of color? I mean not literally the same place like as an address, but the same toxic environment that creates racism.

I have no clue where anyone gets it from. Nobody does. Maybe their parents, maybe a friend, maybe they saw something on TV. Maybe a white guy started dating a girl a black guy liked so now the black guy hates white people. Who knows.

Nobody else here has an actual answer either, its all just well maybe this or that answers and nobody really has a clue.

I think some of it comes from family influence.
My grandfather was racist as hell. He would say things like "I'm moving to Texas and buying guns so I'm ready when the black people try to take over." or he would ask my dad why he let's me be friends with "the blacks".
And it wasn't just black people. He was racist against pretty much anyone not white.

Luckily my dad never bought into that shit and didn't raise me that way.
We would try to talk to my grandfather and help him see reason but he was old and so stuck in his ways that he just didn't want to hear it.

So I think family and those close by you during your upbringing can have a major effect.

I can understad older whites even though it's wrong, they literally grew up in a time when they had black ppl as servants and saw them as inferior.

Where the fuck do whites in their 20s and 30s get off from being prejudiced towards minorities? It's 2021 ffs.

discuss

Being raised by said older white people.

Sometimes something that happened to them. Like I had a friend that overall didn't hate black people but he hated seeing a white girl date a black dude. He finally admitted it was cause a gf of his cheated on him with a black guy. When you dont associate with a particular group much its all too easy to lump everyone of them in with the one or a few negative expierence you had with them. Its like prejudice is hard wired into the human brain. Like we HAVE to have something to hate.
