Racism (and sexism and everything else) is baked into the fabric and structures of our society, a society built and shaped by generations upon generations of racists. That's why it's so hard to dismantle: because it's so pervasive, and most of it isn't obvious to privileged observers. We're innately tribal people and people that we see as not part of our tribe are outsiders, ne'er-do-wells, up to no good, etc. Its something that we can engage in without even thinking. And it wasn't just black people. He was racist against pretty much anyone not white. Luckily my dad never bought into that shit and didn't raise me that way. We would try to talk to my grandfather and help him see reason but he was old and so stuck in his ways that he just didn't want to hear it.
