CalArts animation doesn't necessarily have to come directly from CalArts.

The difference being CalArts isn't some originating source that's responsible for the propagation of fluid animation on simpler models. People got mad about it and needed a target to bleat at.

Thats actually not true. The plot progressed a lot. It definitely progressed A LOT more than its popular contemporaries like GI Joe, MASK, Silverhawks, or He-Man. Thundercats had a true series finale and stories that lead up to the finale.

Like 20 years ago, CN did a run of only the plot progression episodes. It was amazing and surprisingly long, but side characters like the Amazons and those robot bears kind of came out of nowhere because you'd miss their introduction.

You are describing a colloquialism, and you're right about it being the thing. I just take issue with how people can't tell a colloquialism from the literal, actual Calarts. I also take issue with how the colloquialism even came to be, to be honest.

I don't think people even realize most successful animators/animation directors came from the school...or even realize it's an art school. They're just cherrypicking a few shows that came out in the last decade or so that is proof of a particular "style".

Yes, the creators of Steven Universe and Adventure Time are alumni, but so is nearly everyone with Pixar, as well as the director and animators of Into the Spiderverse.

This argument is so weird. People say the Cal Arts artstyle is ugly and then there's always the same response "actually there's no such thing. actually not everyone from Cal Arts does that. actually it's not just a Cal Arts thing". Ok call it another name if you want. We can correct it to say "The artstyle that's like Steven Universe that's now been copied in lots of other shows is ugly". If that makes you feel better.

For me it isn't so much a problem with the style itself, but rather the fact that seemingly EVERY cartoon or animated show from the past 10 years uses it.

even the fucking Star Trek cartoon uses this style for it's characters (at least the exterior shots look amazing)
it's not Thundercats Roar bad, but it still has that sort of look

I don't usually like the eyes and the lack of any muscle definition on characters. Like, imagine He-Man as a man with just the same body a lot of these cartoons have.

I don't hate it for the most part, I think a lot of the shows are good, and it's not like I hate the designs either. I just wish they would add a little more definition, just a tiny bit to give it more life.

That's probably the best Star Trek to come out since DS9, not counting The Orville. The cheap cartoonish style lends itself well to the cheap cartoonish jokes.

Ragging on "CalArts" is boring. It's just artists copying what's popular at the time (Adventure Time and later Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Star vs The Forces of Evil). Style comes and goes in waves and you can see "long weird arms" in other media like Corporate/Big Tech style art, Disney, and some anime. There have always been lazy cash grabs, especially aimed at kids. Look at Johnny Test, a flash style cartoon with rehashed jokes and template storylines that ran for 6 seasons and was constantly on air. Even now, new series are chasing the Avatar train that sprung up off of Netflix's popularity.to mixed degrees of success.

The problem isn't "CalArts", it's lazy and cheap animation for low budget shows that do well amongst kids.

Did you see the third episode where they open a huge conversation on gender? That's classic Star Trek to the core - largely episodic morality plays in space that question humanity's future.
Also, this is hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G39W5lFZDn0

Star Trek is a lot of things, even early on. The Orville tries to do a more modern take on TOS and TNG and hits a lot of good marks. Some of the writers and actors literally worked on Star Trek, too, so I don't know how you can say "it ain't Star Trek."
