Gummo.

It's not incomprehensible on its own.

It just turns the entire history of human life into question.

Eraserhead, maybe.

iirc, it was inspired by David Lynch's fears of becoming a father, or something, but still...

edit: or maybe Gozu

did anyone understand donnie darko when watching it the first time?

if we're talking in the literal sense i have absolutely no idea how people could understand the dialogue in movies like the revenant or true grit... those completely thick accents just throw me off.

Also, I didn't know that, I always thought professors in fields like language made peanuts, but I suppose that's too big of a generalization

I heard there were nine timelines in the movie, or something like that.

Gummo came to mind first.

Also, maybe it's because I was a bit drink and irritable, but my friend made me watch Prometheus and I was literally mad when it finished.

It felt like they shot half of a movie and ran out of time, and when they went to push the "finish" button, pushed random instead. I didn't understand a second of that shit.

Primer was a total "wtf did I just watch". It took a lot of reading to even get a grasp.

Mulholland Drive was confusing as hell, but I still liked the movie and eventually things did make some sense.

Inland Empire made me nauseous like when you have a migraine. That was just a pure fucking waste of time and I didn't even want to make sense of it. Random Terry Crews was the best part of that mess.

I honestly can't think of a movie I've found to be personally incomprehensible in the strictest sense; even with something like Mulholland Dr. I was able to take away some nebulous personal meaning, even if it wasn't the director's intent (and there were little snippets of things that I picked up on in a more objective sense, like the reference to Goddard's 'Contempt' at the very end of the movie).

On that note, there's probably a ton of things in the films I watched during my foreign film studies classes - films like 'Stalker' and most of Goddard's work - that would have gone over my head without the benefit of a teacher and classmates to help noodle through them.

I guess I'd have to say that 'Pierrot le Fou' is probably the most incomprehensible film I've seen, and yet its somehow it's one of my all-time favorite films. I guess I don't have to fully 'get' a movie to enjoy it.
