Basically a huge dick waving contest. Especially people like Musk who say we should colonize Mars to ensure the survival of the human race. That's very dumb. So we leave a dying planet for a dead planet. What a joke.

All efforts should be focused here on Earth, on stopping and reversing climate change and income inequality. Then after that is done, Mars is still dumb. We should have orbital space habitats (stanford torus) instead. Blow up Mars for all I care.

In a way I agree, we really don't have the tech to even make mega structures on Mars since we don't even have advanced Space Technology to make it happen.

Earth should have unity and equality first before we can even think about all that.

I guess people still fail to realize the engineering it takes to do these missions. They're not involved in it so why would they right? Point is the shit they learn doing these missions can and have been applied to improving life on Earth.

That actually would make more sense, having octagonal connected structures from crater to crater throughout the moon would be a interesting concept.

again the tech. involved would have to be highly advanced, and something we can't do yet.

This. The process of developing the technology to go to the moon got us things like plastics, satellite communications, GPS, better computers, etc.

I dunno, the last time we did a giant space dick waving contest, we ended up developing some pretty cool tech and shit along the way.

The runoff innovation from space programs has always been pretty great, and one of its best benefits. A lot of things needed to make stuff like this possible end up having myriad uses.

Terraforming and any sizable population living there is a pipe dream at the moment, but the possibility of forming small population outposts for other space projects is definitely something worth progressing. Being able to form self-sufficient bases that can in turn produce their own materials from that of the planet/planetoids/nearby celestial bodies will greatly increase our ability to explore space.

Well that's the world we live in. People waste money on stupid things all the time. Nothing new at all.

But traveling to mars does have its upsides. Earth and our Sun will NOT be here forever. It's easy for you to say its a waste of money. Because you are living now and will die on this Earth without worrying about it blowing up by the sun. Space travel is more for our future generations. Humanity will still be here when the sun finally loses its power. And that's when moving would be a good idea for those living here at that time.

In fairness, the probability of humanity, or anything even resembling it, still existing on earth by the time the sun gets anywhere near that point is basically 0.

could you imagine our shit species subsisting for what is it, a couple billion years, completely failing at any form of space travel only to get wiped out by the sun as it transitions into a red giant?

Lol such a silly post. You have no idea what the future holds for humans. Nothing will stop us from living life for million years to come. Except maybe an astroid that killed off the dinosaurs. But even that has a slim chance of doing so. Every year technology gets better. Meaning enhanced technology will make living life much easier.

If we survive, that time frame is enough for us to have evolved into an entirely new species several times over.

whether by extinction, travel, or evolution, there is zero chance humanity exists on earth by the time the sun wipes out the planet.

I said "the probability is basically zero."

Because it is.

Billions of years with no evolution, no space travel, and not a single extinction event? How the fuck would we manage that? Like, the sheer amount of planet-wide selective breeding we'd have to do to make sure evolution NEVER occurs is absurd. there's people alive TODAY who would wipe out the world in the next ten minutes,, if they had the tech;how long until one DOES get the tech? To say nothing of, as you said, asteroids. or climate disasters. its not impossible humanity will still be he we e, unchanged in ten billion hears. probably. but thatd take some laser-focused effort that we as a species clearly don't have.
