I would consider a good cop to be someone who does what cops are supposed to do, without prejudice or excess force.

Just curious

"good" is not an inherent quality of a person. that is, it's not something that people are. being "good" is a process of recognizing your own flaws and overcoming them, while trying improve the world and the lives of those around you

I read it as "Cops can't just be considered 'good' if they're actually doing their jobs right (without prejudice or abuse) because that's what you'd expect them to do"

your idea of what cops are "supposed" to be is a complete fabrication. it's a myth. it's propaganda.

to perform the job of a cop is to protect the most powerful and harm the most vulnerable. a "good cop" (that is, a cop that is good at doing their job) is, by necessity, doing bad things.

There's a valid point in that there's an issue with the current police system in America, but it's difficult to have a serious conversation with Joel about this because his solution is to abolish police entirely (as if that wouldn't have disastrous effects) instead of reforming it.

the institution of the police has had disastrous effects for the entirety of its existence, and continues to have disastrous effects today.

besides, reform only ever happens because people push for abolition. it took a year of protests, a 9 minute video of a lynching, and 350 million dollars in property damage to get one cop convicted. obviously progress isn't going to happen overnight, and no one is saying that the police should be abolished overnight either. please don't use that as an excuse to write off what I'm saying

Nagative generalizing is tricky because it's based purely on most peoples emotions, particularly their feelings towards said group. If they like it(BLM) then its bad, if they hate it(police) its good.

And if the past year has proven anything, it's that most people are easily influenced and inconsistent as fuck.
