It is indeed pretty funny that the USSR beat us at pretty much every stage of the Space Race only for us to reach the Moon first and suddenly declare hey, this is the finish line!

I used to feel this way but like think about the scale.

There's an enormous difference between getting something/someone orbiting the Earth, and going to the moon, and back.

The Sputnik 1 orbited at 359 miles above the Earth. The moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth. The US got men all the way there and back alive, with 60s rocketry and computing.

Except there were no practical use cases for the moon and so it was entirely for show. The US moved the goalposts to feel better about themselves.

Funny because I was just at NASA space center and they had a whole area dedicated to the usefulness of further exploring the moon related to resource/energy needs

Don't forget the casualties we have within 200 miles from the earth yet and the farthest we have been is 400 miles. To believe the moon landings is to believe the for the first time in human history that technology has regressed.

For reference (and this is a factoid I read 20-odd years ago in Maxim, so take it with a grain of salt), the original Game Boy had more computing power than the tech used in the Apollo 11 mission.

We've been back several times. Then people started grumbling about what taxpayers were getting out of it and we'd already beaten the commies several times over, so as far as the politicians were concerned, mission accomplished and no more need to compensate for an unpopular war in Vietnam. In case you hadn't noticed, it's politicians who hold the purse strings, not scientists.

Also, "why haven't we been back?" is weird logic for an argument that we never went in the first place. So you're prepared to consider that multiple Moon landings were a hoax that fooled the entire world, including the Soviets who, in the middle of the Cold War and the imminent threat of nuclear destruction from the sky, would have been keeping a beady eye on every man-made object that America sent up into the stratosphere and beyond. But apparently not going back exposes the limitations of the hoax because for some reason, these evil masterminds wouldn't able to simulate more than six crewed landings.
