I have those Sony XM4 headphones, which should have been amazing on PS5 except they're not because the PS5 doesn't support Bluetooth audio

In all fairness, I get it, there is a significant lag in Bluetooth audio. But come on. They should have found some way, even if it was proprietary.

To be fair, $100 is basically a steal for what is a mid to high range wireless headset.
It also works with the series X. Amazingly. You have to use the headphone jack on the controller, though.

I'm still on the fence about buying it, because I love my xm4 headphones and they are far better headphones overall. That said, the pulse headset has far more advanced 3D audio support with the PS5, including virtual surround sound, which makes me think it might be worth it just to watch movies and play games like I'm in surround sound

I mean, the 3D audio is all software-based and "calculated" on the PS5 before the audio is even sent to the headset, so it'll work with any headset. Your last gen one is probably still fine, the Pulse doesn't have any advantage in that regard.

I thought gaming headsets were a scam.

Sort of, but at least on PS5 there actually is code specifically for the pulse headset, which is why it uses a proprietary dongle.

There's no hardware within the headset that would give it an advantage in respect to the 3D sound, it's just a standard stereo headset. That code is probably just for compatibility features like adjusting game chat balance from the headset (something I can't do with my wireless headset, even though there's a dial for it, for example). Unless they're purposefully neutering the 3D audio for non-Pulse headsets to make the Pulse seem better lol

The 3D audio can be used on literally any headset, and it will have the same effect as the Pulse headset. I have tested it out myself.

The Pulse headset is fucking garbage, shit comfort, shit physical controls, and shit build quality. The Arctis 7p blows it out of the water in every way. Better sound quality, better controls (volume slider is much easier to use than up and down buttons), doesnt feel cheap like some plastic toy, and its much more comfortable. The Pulse headset is angled super awkwardly around the ears and is just too small in general.

Yeah, I needed a wireless headset and almost got the Pulse just because it looks cool haha. I did some research and ended up splurging on the Audeze Penrose. They sound fantastic but are probably overkill if you only plan on using them for gaming. I got them as an all-purpose kind of thing, since I've never owned an "audiophile" pair of headphones before it's nice to have something good I can use for music and stuff too.

Like others said, 3D audio works with any stereo headset.

I have used a beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohms for all my gaming (put a 40 dollar'ish modmic on them to have them act as my gaming headset). Sounds real nice, boomy bass, velour earpads by default so they are extremely comfortable, and built like a tank. The only downside is that the cord isn't detachable.

Headsets like these though, the dualshock 4 and the dualsense isn't going to be able to fully power them to bring out their potential/impedance is too high...going to want to get a usb amp/dac. I use my old astro mixamp pro TR for volume control in a usb slot, and this isn't really needed but I like it anyway to get the sound a little more oomph a fiios E17k portable amp.

I just now realized that I can use the XM4s powered-on while plugged into the controller, which dramatically improves audio richness (and adds noise cancellation, so yay that)
