The guys at the top of those offices probably get tired of being in a over congested, over saturated, overly expensive, dump of a major city so they move HQ elsewhere like Greenville SC which is a beautiful little city.

One of the issues in Illinois is that a trio of pretty major companies (State Farm in Bloomington, Caterpillar in Peoria, and John Deere in the Quad Cities) have all either moved, are in the process of moving, or used the threat of moving to Chicago or out of state to basically get a king's ransom from locals to stay. Caterpillar moved to the Chicago suburbs, and Peoria is still hurting, while Moline gave Deere the keys to the city and Bloomington-Normal is in a case of constant petrificafion about State Farm opening up massive offices in the south.

I get that most young people want to live in major cities, and I'm living in a wealthy Chicago suburb for that reason as well despite having a rural background, but there is a major existential dread in places that still have big companies and nothing but decline on the horizon for loads of smaller cities that have already lost their cornerstone businesses.

Property taxes are so jacked up in Illinois that a sweetheart carveout is nigh-critical for business viability.

Tax breaks are the reason. You think corporations care about their employees quality of life?

There is a Greenville in NC and TN.

But they're way out there and has no significant purpose.

Went to Greenville, SC on business. Twice. Heat, humidity, mosquitos, racism and more. Most everything closes at 8 pm so get your shit before then.

More confederate flags than you can shake a fist at.

People have a lot of cars there. Some even run. Some of them are in the driveways. A lot in the front or backyard though.

Third time I sent a subordinate. Fourth time, subordinate asked to send someone else. The one guy who liked it was a fuckup who ended up getting terminated for other reasons shortly later.

Chicagoland is still booming, it's the rest of the state that's stagnating for the most part. Idiocy in Springfield and city hall certainly hurts, but Illinois is a case study for basically the decline of rural America as a brain drain is pulling people out to the cities.

And while Chicago's population has gone down, the suburbs have jacked up.

Seems like as many young people live in Greenville as they do anywhere else.
