So much garbage. I don't even know where to begin.

The good

• Akiyama god
• Saejima god
• the mass shooting scene
• kiryu handling everyone in his way
• akiyama god
• prison break scene
• majima family on the streets scene
• katsuragi disappearing all the pedestrians scene
• kiryu's verbal takedown of daigo "it was my fault for thinking you could handle it" like jesus how did daigo not kill himself after that

The bad

• kido garbage dumb lame kid
• arai stupid goon with inferiority complex
• munakata idiot short guy coward goon
• rubber bullets. get the fuck out of here
• saejima wanting to prey on Haruka (this was one of the worst scenes i've ever seen in a video game)
• stupid amount of betrayal plot twists
• leave the gun next to the defeated villain TWICE IN TWO MINUTES
• daigo betraying everyone
• yasuko. all of it

yeah the stories were never too great for me but damn did the writing in this one suck. katsuragi's plan for 1985 was terrible. the reveals with sugiuchi and arai were terrible. daigo selling out majima and gunning for the money was terrible. when arai shoots munakata in his office, how does he not suspect rubber bullets? how does someone so deep in this not think of that?

anyway yeah. pretty cool game. saejima and akiyama are great new characters, cuz theyre gods

Third best game in the series TBQH.

I played them all in order last summer, this one was soo bad wow, dragged.

I only liked 2 and 0 really though.

Yeah that was fucking awkward. Although he'd been in prison for how many years and she was the first female he ever laid eyes on. And he didnt really do anything, just kind of got lost in thought? I'm not sure, I think that's what the developers were going for?

Edit: Also it wasnt actually preying either. Been a while since I played it but nothing like that ever happened. Correct me if I'm wrong.

so my ranking thus far is as follows

Kiwami 2 > 0 > 4 > 3 > Kiwami

I think the stories in 1, 2, and 4 are particularly bad, but 4's is just a whole tier below, at least. Something about it didn't quite feel right. My suspension of disbelief only goes so far. Not to mention the character assassination of Daigo

I'm glad the series finally added characters I can like almost as much as I like Kiryu, but the rubber bullet reveal and the Haruka scene really damage Saejima in my eyes. And then after the haruka scene, Kiryu even writes it off as "heh been there man"

5 has the worst playable character in the series and certain alternate gameplay segments that are super divisive. I liked them well enough but they can be a slog for people.

Yeah it's weird he didnt do anything, but that paraphrase does not encompass Kiryu at all. You'll know what I mean when you play 6. I'd rather not spoil it but it's more about him being patient and understanding than uh, whatever you're paraphrasing. Although anyone else would have decked him by that point (rightly so).

Edit: Although now that I think about it, maybe that paraphrase was right. It's hard to see in the mind of a guy like him.

Rubber bullets is infamous, and the Haruka scene is really fucking gross. I agree with you 100%. And then Kiryu is like "I knew you were a good man because you didn't rape my daughter after spending 25 years in prison". There's a very insidious and gross manner of writing, and it's something you've gotta put up with to get to the good stuff. But fuck me, that part of the game is genuinely disgraceful.

Otherwise - and that's a big otherwise - Yakuza 4 is one of my favorite Yakuza games. Like you said, Akiyama god. Also, Taiga god - but mostly Akiyama god. I like how the different player characters give you different insights into the main conspiracy, I thought it gave the plot a lot of life. And then it all ties in at the end, and you all show up to the final battle in tuxedos, and it fucking rocks. But there are certainly caveats that you have to contend with to get to that point.

Another thing that's fucked up is Akiyama's casual suggestion that a single mother work at a rub and tug to keep her head afloat. Like I said before, there's some really slimy and insidious writing in this game, and it's something to watch out for. But the meat of the game is so good otherwise.

Honestly, the Yakuza games had a big issue with transphobia. 1 has the dine-and-dasher who dresses as a woman, but who found out that she liked living as a woman and decided to transition. You still beat her up for dining and dashing, in a series where you don't fight women - the logic being "it's a man in a dress, so punch away". 3 had the ugly trans woman who keeps chasing Kiryu under threat of raping him, who they thankfully cut out of the remaster. There's liberal use of a diminutive slur for trans people too, with one of Akiyama's last scenes hinging on a seedy trans bar which he refers to with the diminutive term - at least in the original.

We play up how wild and wacky the franchise is, but for stuff like the trans treatment and the scene where Kiryu is like "you could have raped my daughter but you didn't, that must mean you're a good man", it's worth watching yourself as you play. Slot cars, arena fights, arcade games and claw machines are all well and good, but there's some pretty gross stuff sitting just under the surface.

Yeah, I apologize for that.

But, anyway, I love the series but after Like a Dragon, I think I'm ready to move on. I didn't hate the game but I feel like making it turn based feels out of place. I don't currently have a Series X, but I'm planning on getting one on Black Friday, and when I do, I'm making Judgement my first SX game.
