I believe the ball is dead the moment it hits a member of the batting team.

Does it hit the batter or the bat?

If it hits the bat it's a fly ball that is an out if caught. Infield hit if lands inbounds and a strike if it lands in foul territory. If it lands in foul territory for strike 3, the batter must be tagged or thrown out at first.

If it hits the batter, he takes first base.

If I'm understanding the question right, it hits the bat, then the batter.

Pretty sure if it hits the bat first or the batter swings at it, the ball is in play regardless if the batters body makes contact with the ball or not.

Ok, not sure but I think the bat takes precedence. If it hit the batter first, batter takes precedence.

if it hits the batter and then the bat, the play was dead the moment it hit the batter and they will take first base.

if the batter swings before they are hit with the ball, it is a strike and the play is dead.

@coolcono

We, or at least I, need clarification on your initial question.

Good thread, btw.

This.

Also have a random Little League memory of fouling a ball off my foot, but the ump didn't call it dead and it rolled in front of the plate. Got tagged out standing there like "wtf?"

Still, it was a good move to not think about it too much and just tag you out. I probably would have done the same and thought too much about what just happened. When instead I should pay attention to the umpire.
