I'm sure during the time it wasn't. Surely Italians a century ago were also subject to typical anti-immigration types thanks to the publicity of organized crime. But at a certain point public culture just decided it was kinda cool.

Is it all due to The Godfather?

The Godfather was part of it but another was they were seen as facilitators during prohibition.
Lot of people wanted booze and the mafia were there to provide.

The godfather, the idea they had a community first sorta mentality, and pushing the big "loyalty above all" thing. Creates a kinda nice setup for people glorifying it.

Definitely godfather and popular culture.

One of my great-great uncles or whatever (Sicilian) was a storeowner in SF in the late 1800s and his cousin in the mafia came by to shake him down and he told him if he ever came back he had five sons and five shotguns waiting for him lol.

The funny thing is that most mafia stories are more about how that premise is completely fake.

Yeah, my post, while admittedly an anecdotal family story, highlights that well.

Yeah, but people listen to what they say and ignore what they do for some reason. Or find a way to justify it.

Yeah the concept of a protection racket itself must have been so damn stressful for store owners to go through. Basically paying a bunch of criminals to leave you alone.

Movies and pop culture propped up a lot of organized crime. Asian Mafia's like the Yakuza have also been glorified.
