Five straphangers were randomly attacked by at least two fiends during a terrifying 35-minute span on the rails early Friday in Manhattan, police said. The first victim was on his way to work while sitting on a southbound 4 train at 4:25 a.m. when he was approached by at least two strangers one of whom tried to stab him several stops later at 23rd Street, according to cops and police sources. The victim fought his assailant, only to be attacked again when he was slashed in the face at Union Square, sources said. The victim got off the train, and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, cops said. The suspects stayed on board and targeted two more men asleep in different cars at 4:34 a.m., according to cops. One of the victims, 41, said a man woke him up at Astor Place and punched him in the face, according to police sources. The other victim, 40, said he woke up to his friend being attacked and then was slashed himself, the sources said. Both victims got off at the Astor Place station. Police sources said those two victims were homeless, but authorities could not officially confirm this.

The suspects still remained on the train and slashed a 44-year-old man in the head during a robbery at 4:37 a.m., police said. An unspecified amount of cash was stolen from the victim, and his cell phone was hurled onto the tracks, according to cops and police sources. That victim got off at the Brooklyn Bridge subway station and was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, cops said. Then at 5 a.m., in an apparently connected incident, another 44-year-old man was stabbed in the right eye and slashed in the back and left side of his neck, with his backpack also stolen, on a northbound D train at the 59th Street/Columbus Circle station, police sources said. None of the incidents were believed to be hate crimes, cops said. At least two of the suspected attackers are now in custody, sources said.

It's what the NYPost calls people riding on the subway. Because the Post has to be as annoying as possible in every way.

This is why you always ride in the car with either the conductor or operator in them if you're taking the train at early or late hours.

Clearly, guns are the problem. oh wait...

Not only is the conductor and operator enclosed in a small room where they cant see or barely hear you, but even if they could they aint gonna do shit.

NYC subway is the Wild West and the criminals dont care about someone maybe yelling, Hey! at them, because at best thats what might happen.

Better than being in the ass end of the train with no one else. Most riders tend to be in the middle cars anyways

Ive never heard of the term myself, but if I had to guess, it would mean people who stand on the subway and hold onto the straps that are in place to help you keep your balance.
