Ive kinda wanted to check it out for a while now but I heard about the GCD situation and it makes the game seem so slow and clunky

If you have the time to commit to it, yeah. The story is a slow burn, and it still feels MMO-y at times, but it has one of the best narratives in the franchise, and has a ton of side content.

It's free until post-Heavensward, which is hundreds of hours of stuff.

The GCD starting at 2.5 seconds really does not make it slow & clunky, in all honesty. And even then you almost never actually play it with that high, depending on the job you play, it can be significantly lower than that, or just a bit lower. It's an absolutely phenomenal game that I would recommend to anybody.

Pretty much every job has off GCD skills to weave in between your GCD moves.

Some also have abilities that reduce your GCD time significantly.

So, theres plenty of jobs to choose from that keep you busy at the higher levels. The gameplay feels pretty slow to start though if youre already used to the style.

Definitely a fun game and best MMO available. Im on a forced break as I have a broken left finger and I cant WASD, but I dont care enough to relearn the game on a controller

When you decide you want to do the Stormblood/Shadowbringers expansions (Which is potentially literally hundreds of hours in). Or if you want to remove the free trial limitations(which IMO, is definitely worth dealing with until you finish the Heavensward story, because they're not really that bad).

You can't join a free company (guild), add friends, or hire retainers (NPCs that sell on the marketboard). Everything else - all quests, classes, and races - are playable up to level 60.

2)A gil cap of 300,000 which is pointless since you can't use the marketboard to buy/sell items on the free trial anyways
3)No /shout or /tell (zone/private messaging) options
4)Cannot join free companies (Guilds)
5)Cannot create parties, however, CAN join them.
3+4 are the only ones that are even remotely approaching actual limitations, and are wholly designed to help curb RMT activity.

Having a guild helping me run quests is the only thing that got me through the boring main story, so that's a pretty big minus in my eyes. FF14 has tons of helpful people in it, such a huge plus when you're trying to learn the game. I say the game is well worth paying for.

I would say so, I hate the kind of combat it has but it's still fun for me despite that, the crafting and gathering stuff is pretty fun spent a whole day just gathering rocks and stuff lol and I got a house, and I haven't even gotten to the latest expansion content yet. Social aspects of this game are really good IMO. Only downside I would say is if you aren't interested in the story then doing the main quests to progress is gonna feel like a slog

Even with it's flaws, it's the best MMORPG out right now. Absolutely worth it. If you're worried about slow gcd, play machinist

Or Monk/Ninja. Both also have very fast GCDs.

It still baffles me that most things up to the end of Heavensward is free. That's basically a whole game itself.
