People dont obsessively play sports.

You cant play basketball for 16 hours a day... but if you did you would probably be in ridiculously good shape.

You would actually be wrecking your body. Imagine how awful that much running and jumping every day would be for your knees and legs in general.

Regular basketball played safely is probably good for you. 16 hours a day is vastly in excess of what is healthy.

  • alcohol
  • drugs
  • sitting around doing nothing
  • casual sex with people I don't care about
  • videogames

Just add it to my list of things that i should limit my time with

Sports promotes drug/substance abuse. Because nobody who takes sports seriously is in it to be 2nd place or worse. Everybody has to fight to come in first or you're just a failure at life.

Sports are also conducive to aggression and violence, both of which are more probable due to the inherent drug/substance abuse in Sports.
Sports also promote the consumption of very unhealthy items because "top athletes" consume them. These items may cause long term damage to your average consumer that's been misguided into idolizing their favorite athlete/team and may even cause DEATH.

Sounds to me like gaming is the lesser evil here...

I played starcraft competitively and then switched to poker and made a living and these are both games that likely helped me with problem solving a lot, nothing sad about it, the only downside really is that you are sitting while doing it and moving around is generally just healthier, desk jobs are just as bad

Its one of the main reason so many dudes are depressed and unsuccessful. Instead of actually doing things to better themselves, they just sit around wasting massive amounts of time. Gaming has literally zero benefits when it comes down to it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't ever play them, I still do. But in the end they're just one of the worst things you could do with your free time. At least movies and shows are less monotonous if you choose well. Where as games are always super repetitive.

So, I dont quite feeling like sifting through all 80 posts at the moment, but let me take a shot in the dark at what's happening, here.

- "Something something theyre non-productive something something you should be working/being productive literally 100% of the time"

- Some sort of slippery slope "you play them ten hours a day" crap

- Complete disregard for science backing up the mental and physical health benefits of leisure time/entertainment

- Complete disregard for negative effects of doing ANYTHING to excess.

- lots of name calling and stubborn one liners.

Did I miss anything, or am I clear to jump in?

I do what I think is fun. I cant do sports because I cant breathe as good as others or have the energy to do so. I play games every day and Im fine. Plus you act like I play 24/7. I still go outside, use the bathroom, eat, sleep, do work, and more. And it isnt wasting time. Why would I want to do baseball? For health benefits? Why do that when I can just exercise instead of playing something I find boring? Ill continue playing acnh, thanks.

It depends on the person. If you just play video games all the time and do nothing else, sure. But I dont think playing games as a hobby is unhealthy, but it depends on the person.

Its important for anyones mental health to spend free time doing something they enjoy, so in that sense it can be healthy.

Pretty much every procedure I have picked up either as a surgical intern or an anesthesiology resident has been pretty intuitive and my attendings commend how quickly I picked up on things like ultrasound guided regional blocks or central line placement.

Growing up, my verbal reasoning scores on standardized tests were always above average and I grew up playing a lot of RPGs with text before voice acting was common.

It's also how I keep in touch with my friends who are out doing residency all over the country. Easy enough to log on for 30 minutes to play a match of rainbow six and chat/catch up on discord.

Something tells me you are just projecting your insecurities onto the hobby as a whole. It may be toxic for you, but it's not inherent in the hobby. No more or less than someone who over indulges in quite literally anything.
