Background: student is on his cell phone between classes. We have a no phone policy except during lunch breaks and during classroom with teacher's permission.

The boy was told by me that he's not to have it out during the hallway unless it's during a lunch period. He then had it during a study period (no class so he does not have permission to use it without a written note from the teacher), he then tells the teacher monitoring study period that I told him he's allowed have it.

I'm not even a fucking teacher
so I got asked, told him I'd go to bat for him this once if he agreed not to use my name to get out of trouble with asking me first
He gets his phone back and gets caught with it a day later. Phone got taken off him for one day starting today. I just got forwarded an email from the principal with the text 'FYI, I will reply on your behalf to the parent'

'To whom it concerns,
Please tell me why the computer guy is taking the property of my son? He absolutely requires his phone for me to contact him after school and he has no right whatsoever to confiscate any student property. I expect a formal apology and for the computer guy to be reprimanded. I also would request you have the computer guy Garda vetted (criminal background check) as taking student property is not acceptable by non-teachers'

It's actually every year we're checked. Legally it's every two years but the school does it every year.
Mine is up in August
but it's still funny.

Oh yeah like it's in the policies on the website.
I forget it but it's something like:
first offense is taken until the end of the class/period.
second is until the end of the day
third is end of the next day
fourth is for a week
fifth is they're not allowed have it at all on them and they're to hand it into the front office every morning (parent has to actually sign to agree to that one) or they get suspended if they're found with it.

Wait is brutal IT at a school. Lmao. Anyway sounds like a karen but she also isn't wrong. If the IT guy did something like that anywhere I went to school to a student they'd be fired on the spot

I do teach some classes but I'm not a licensed teacher

I'm not just the sysadmin; I agreed to teach some classes for them because it turns out 99% of kids are dumb as fuck with actually using shit like 'the computer' for 'work'.

And also the kids come to me to get me to talk to the teachers or principal on their behalf when they have no fucking idea what to do.

I mean if all you did was enforce policy by confiscating a cell phone, then your defense is "I followed school employee policy and if you have an issue take it up with the principal" or whoever the escalation path is for stuff like that. You don't make the policy, you just follow them.

I mean you don't need to be a qualified teacher to teach non-government tested subjects.
Like I couldn't teach chemistry in a classroom but could teach IT (which I do) too.

That's the thing. I didn't confiscate the phone. He claims I did despite y'know, the year head physically being handed it by the student.

What a bizarre phone policy. Why exactly aren't they allowed to use it in-between classes?

Because 'breaks' between classes are about 5 minutes to get to the next class. It's not like America where you might have a free period. Those are incredibly rare and only really for any children not doing Irish/a foreign language and even then they have laptops for school work if needed.

I should probably have added this to the first post but
He's using me as a way to say the phone being taken was 'unfair'. Hence why there was no mention of his year head taking it and why it was sent to the principal instead of his year head like it's supposed to be done.

I agree that it's a weird phone policy, but maybe it's standard now? Phones were basic as hell when I was in high school in the early 2000's, so they weren't strict on them.

It's not really weird.
Even if you ignore everything else the simple fact they're not allowed to use them but by their lockers or openly outside of break is still fine. They only ever move from room to room in less than five minutes anyway since they don't have breaks between classes outside of lunch

Like 9/10 times none of us would say hand it over unless it was a repeated offense. Like at most we'll say 'put it away'. Like if we heard one student tell another to go fuck themselves it's 'language, stop that' instead of writing them up. Unless it's repeatedy then it's fine.

I now receive an email from the parent to the IT helpdesk
Email Subject:
Email Content: This is [redacted's] parent, it is urgent you return [redacted's] phone to him immediately. Please meet him in the parking lot when I drop him off to school at 8AM tomorrow morning.

'I'm not sure why the teacher is claiming they took it. Obviously he needs it after school to contact me. Please have it returned ASAP as he cannot contact me without it. Have you check the IT storage rooms to see if he took the phone there0?'

Taken for one day but given back at the end of the day and the next morning it's to be handed into the vice principal until the end of that day.

Honestly good for you TC. Taking away the phone should be the first offence. Call the parents to notify them. Ask if they need to be in contact with there child.

Repeat offences, more severe punishments. With plenty of warnings in advance. Tired of these snowflake policies. I understand a parent needing to keep contact. In certain situations.

Don't worry about the parent. Just relay your story to the vice/principal (especially the fact that you didn't take the phone) and let the situation sort itself out. Let the bitch write as many letters to you as she wants. Just don't go near her.
