I honestly don't know. I've had a few breeds, and they all adapted to me, let me hold them, chilled with me, but I don't know if i'd call it an emotional connection like you get with a dog or a cat. I think you are more of a warm, non-threatening thing that gives them food.

Hey that's good enough imo. "There's the giant that is warm and feeds me. I'll go hang out with him a while" is good enough. I don't expect the same thing from them as I do a dog

Or another human

Krocodile skinks are one of the few reptiles where a male and female pair up and stay together to raise a child. Not sure if this would translate to being an affectionate pet.

All reptiles would eat you without remorse or hesitation if they ever got the chance. They're incapable of empathy.

To my knowledge, reptiles literally haven't grown the part of their brain that nurturing, maternal instincts come from. Biologists theorize that mammals developed this part of their brain because they nurture and raise their young where as reptiles don't.

So, it isn't going to love you in the way that a dog might, however the turtle we had as a kid used to walk to my Mom when she went outside. It clearly recognized her as a food source and associated positive stimulus to her.

That being said, does it really matter? It's about if YOU enjoy taking care of the animal and if YOU find it rewarding. There are idiots on this board who have told me my dog doesn't "actually love" me. Not only is that impossible to know, but it's irrelevant given the fulfillment I get from taking care of him.

Depends on the type, but it seems like they might learn to treat you like desirable object or food provider. They dont really possess the capacity for bonding for the sake of mental well being like mammals, but you can at least have them seek you out for a craving they desire, whether your body heat, comfort, or just food. I guess it mostly just depends on if thats good enough for you or not.

There are some reptiles that will develop a "bond" with their owner with enough interaction, but they tend to be the larger more expensive lizards. Stuff like Tegus, water monitors, ackies and so on. Smaller stuff like beardies will tolerate handling, and show some excitement when you are nearby, but its mostly because they anticipate food.

I had to take care of my brother's iguana for about a year.

He was a pretty tame lizard. Didn't become angry or scared when I got close and let me pick him up and carry him around. I think he had learned that being picked up usually meant being taken to a tub of warm water (where he'd poop) or a place where he could bask in the sunlight.

He'd bop his head now and then when he'd see me, but my brother said that was his way of saying "just so you know, this is my territory, but I'm okay with you as long as you don't annoy me." That iggy had some interesting habits and quirks, though. He'd often sleep on a table where the sun would shine last as it set, but occasionally, he'd climb on the sofa at the other end of the room and doze off there. He'd also "sniff" my hand with his tongue if I put it up close to his mouth and do a quick tongue thrust immediately after. I don't know if it was some kind of meaningful iguana language, or simply his way of getting rid of a bad taste he got from my hand. Speaking of which...

There was one time when he was chilling on my kitchen table in the morning, and I let him lick the coffee in my spoon. He shut his eyes and shook his head, then turned away and walked to the other end of the table, where he then cast a wide eye at me.
I interpreted that as him going "oh yuck" and then staring at me with sort of "Yo, WTF don't scare me like that!"

Sometimes, I'd approach him only to gently pet him for a few seconds. Never over the head, and I was always cautious of his tail. Only his back and sides and under his jaw, and I was always careful in removing skin he was shedding. I think he learned through my gentleness that I wasn't a danger. As for if he felt affection? Not sure. I think he was unafraid of me, but not aggressive, and probably understood that I was harmless and often heralded food, relocation to a safe place to poop, or help in removing itchy skin.

That is pretty much how I took our boa when I was a kid. We did handle it a lot when it was very little so by time it got bigger was used to it, and like you said, probably just knew scents and things and was more a case of "I get to stretch and things when big hands come for me."

I'm aware of your first point, but as for it really mattering.. Yeah. I don't want to keep something that just despises me and despises its whole being lol

I mean, I don't think it's going to despise you. It isn't plotting your downfall.

That being said, be careful with iguanas. They get extremely territorial and will sometimes take over parts of their owners homes. My cousin learned this the hard way.

My three snakes know who I am by smell. They know I'm the mouse giver, and they also tend to be more docile when I'm holding them as oppose to when someone else is holding them.

When my corn snake was eggbound she did not let the vet techs get her out of her carrier, but she let me. So I think there is a very basic foundation of connection that reptiles can form, even if the basis of it revolved around food and who they see/handle more

Bearded Dragons are a species that can also give off a pretty strong illusion of companionship, but they are just docile creatures in general
