Does CE think he looks the part?

https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/green-lantern-jeremy-irvine-hbo-max-alan-scott-gay-superhero-1234977204/

HBO Maxs upcoming Green Lantern series is eyeing actor Jeremy Irvine for the role of Alan Scott.

Irvine would join Finn Wittrock in the series, who has been cast in the lead role of Guy Gardner. HBO Max declined to comment.

Scott was Earths first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man. He was created by Martin Nodell and made his comic book debut in 1940. A train engineer by trade, Scott derived his powers from a mystical green lantern crafted from a mysterious meteorite. He later joined the Justice Society of America, and in universe-hopping adventures would sometimes team with members of the Green Lantern Corps, including Hal Jordan.

Based on the DC Comics property, the show was first announced in 2019 and was ordered to series last year. The story spans decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with Scott, and then heading to 1984 with cocky alpha male Gardner and half-alien Bree Jarta. Theyll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.

Irvine most recently starred in the USA Network series Treadstone. He is primarily know for his feature work, having starred in films like War Horse, The Railway Man, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Billionaire Boys Club. Irvine also played the lead role in Roland Emmerichs 2015 film Stonewall, about the landmark riots in New York City in 1969 that launched the LGBTQ rights movement as we know it today.

HBO Max has ordered 10 one-hour episodes of Green Lantern. The series is co-written and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, with Grahame-Smith serving as showrunner. Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, and David Katzenberg also executive produce, with Elizabeth Hunter and Sara Saedi co-executive producing. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

I hope they keep the regular costume. Alan Scott has by far the most bad ass looking green lantern costume and somehow it's even more badass in Kingdom Come.

Gay is cool. The actor? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt I guess but on appearance alone I don't like it. Also they should have him bleach his hair.

That would be cool.

I have a feeling though that they will keep him as a brunette Hollywood is kind of weird when it comes to male actors sporting red or blonde hair. Or is it just me who feels that way?

In movies guys with red hair = sidekick/comic relief; guys with blonde hair = villain

My mental picture of Alan is that he's a bit older/more rough looking than this handsome lad. And I suppose as with Iceman, I don't really agree with corporate's thinking to "reveal" an established character's sexuality, when there exist such characters that deserve a push but are left to the dregs out of the notion they can't sell.

At the time he was created, simply being gay was illegal. Besides, real people go for years in some identity into to come out decades later. George Takei was 68 years old when he revealed he was gay. George Michael might have been in the closet forever if he wasn't caught by a cop in a bathroom. Alan Scott suddenly being gay isn't the historical revisionism some people claim it is. It's pretty fucking normal for a real person to behave that way.

True, and my intention isn't to discredit their experiences or anyone else's.
For transparency's sake, I dislike the fan-fiction/soapy nature of the Big 2 comics that inevitably results in writers not involved in the creation of characters, retconning them to fit their narrative down the line. Purely from a storytelling perspective, it has a disingenuous, uncreative nature.
Why not tell a story in the vein of Inuyashiki, Strongest Man Kurosawa etc, about a new (from our perspective) older hero, who's lived as Takei or Michael have, and comes to terms with who he really is?
Unless Nodell's original intention was for Alan to be gay, or to come out later in his life, it feels as fraudulent to me as Gwen Stacy having Osborn's kids or turning Plas avaricious.

Honestly, unless DC said that they are having this TV adaptation of the character be gay, I'm not sure I would assume he will be. Alan Scott was only gay in the largely forgotten and overlooked New 52 Earth 2 series. A series where his powers were different, he was given a far more generic costume and that hasn't been referenced in years.

I mean DC still might go for it, but I wouldn't be shocked either if they just went for classical interpretation of the character given how they abandoned everything about the New 52 version of the character.

Oh. They very well might have. I'm always a few months behind on my comic lore as I don't have the time to keep up with it weekly (and frankly 4 bucks a book is just pricey).

It's an interesting choice. I had zero issues with the Earth 2 version being gay. One of Alan Scott's long-term and consistent story-arcs throughout the years was his complicated relationship with villain/love-interest Rose and Thorn. Obviously it is very possible to struggle with sexual identity and come out later in life, but choosing a character that has had his love-life so consistently a notable part of his character drama to be the JSA member to come out feels more like corporate mandate than organic character growth. Especially when they could have just as easily put greater emphasis on his son Obsidian, who has been gay for decades and spends far too much time literally the background despite having a fun powerset. Ultimately it isn't a big deal anyway and I'm just being a crotchety old-continuity nerd.

The Justice League cartoon was the best thing to ever happen to John Stewart, who is easily the most boring of the Earth GLs (and that is an impressive feat when you are competing with Hal Jordan).

Comic John Stewart basically just talks about being an architect/marine all the time and whines about Xanshi.

I really didn't know much about any of the GLs before the cartoon (I think one was in STAS?) but I really liked how his military background and poor experiences growing were subtly woven in to the plots and character (the episode where bonds really firmly with the comic book characters in the alternate world because he didn't have that many people to look up to growing up)
