Born in NY, raised in PA, moved to Atlanta at 18, now live in Tennessee. Cost of living is cheaper, people are friendlier, more neighborly. Also a very clear difference in racism, it's not uncommon here to hear people drop the N word in casual conversation at restaurants or gas stations. Much more republican, lot of pick up trucks, confederate flags, and people are generally a lot more dumb. Not trying to be mean, but it's just the flat truth, there are a lot of really stupid people here. My nephew started kindergarten here a few years ago, and half of the kids in his class haven't spoken their first word yet, or just said stuff like "Hi" and "kitty" while he was capable of full structured sentences and good communication.

A lot of real good food here at local family restaurants, people in the South can cook. If you are at a store parking lot and struggling to get something into your truck, people come help without asking, again, there's a lot of friendly, kind hearted folks. Police here are real helpful and nice, right now I live in a small town with a population under 900, I know all the officers on a first name basis, I go fishing with one of them. There is barely any crime here.

Weather can break 100 degrees which is tough, we do get tornadoes, one ripped through my backyard a year ago and ripped up a 80 foot tall oak tree and it fell like 15 feet from my house, it was absolutely terrifying. I live on top of a mountain on the Smokies, so when the wind hits, the wind hits hard. The wildlife is incredible, so many species of birds visit here, we get bobcats, mountain lions, bears, skunks, coyotes, opossums, racoons, groundhogs, boar, and a ton of deer, among other things.

Big differences in certain areas, don't live there but having traveled for work I can tell you the people of Mississippi were not the brightest. Nice aw shucks type people, all the women had the same haircut, lots of obesity. I had to explain where the city of Philadelphia was located to one woman however.

Memphis wasn't nearly as bad although you could tell they were building up the whole area again. Would literally be one street too far from where all the construction was happening and it'd be a mess.

I've had a similar experience but the low-key and sometimes blatant racism and homophobia just irks me to no end. It doesn't effect me personally but I just hate seeing it.

But yea, people definitely are dumber, just simpler and less educated.

I worked with the public in the North and the South, met and interacted with a lot of people. Many people here just don't have a grasp on common knowledge, the education system in the South is much worse than it is in the North. I worked as a retail manager here for a while, and a third of the high school kids that we hired didn't know the value of a dime or a quarter, didn't know how to write a check, and basic math was foreign to them. Like 20 plus 17, and deer in headlights look on their face. Talking politics to people, i've heard more than once "I don't really know what economy means but I trust in Trump." Things like that.

I'm from San Jose, California, moved to the central Arkansas/Little Rock area when I was about 13. I've kept in touch with family in the Sacramento area and visited them a few times over the years, and gone back to see a few friends. Though I don't pretend to know what it's like to live there any more obviously. I also lived in DC briefly.

Definitely people way more open with racism was a big culture shock to me when I moved here. Also the open preference for/assumption that I was Christian. A lot of ignorance stemming just from those two things (like people saying Catholics and Mormons aren't Christian totally sincerely, not like "oh they're not in communion with the true Christian church" just totally mistaking their beliefs). Poor education system in general and overall. People here had way lower ambitions; I had never known people who wanted to drop out of school early just to work at Walmart and move out before they turned 18. But I met several people like that here, even though there are just way less people to know in the first place. Everything is smaller and slower. Ymmv

People do honk their horn around here but its usually not used to intended purposes. Like if you see someone you know on the road. Or pulling up to a friend's house and letting em know you are outside. Which i hate. We have cell phones people use em

People are different and are only nicer to your face. Food is different and generally has less variety. Weather is terrible for the entire spring and summer. People don't honk their horn. They drive overly nice to the point of danger or get offended when you honk at them for cutting you off.

Moved from MA to GA.

Upsides:
Better weather
Safer roads due to no snow/ice
Much cheaper cost of living and for newer properties
Greater variety of food
Way less traffic (Atlanta is an exception)
More diversity

Downsides:
Terrible driving
Flat af in the coastal southeast+Florida, no hill/mountain sports or hiking
Coastal area also has bad biting gnats, at least in GA+SC
It can kind of lack the same charm as the northeast, although of course that area loses its charm in the winter
Education and crime are a little worse in general

People are worse at driving in snow. Cities are worse equipped to deal with heavy snow.
People have no idea about how it is up north (likewise, naturally, northerners don't know much about how it is down south).
Shorter distances are considered "too far".
People abuse different substances, although that could very well have changed over the recent years.

Yeah I thought it was great when we got this new Yorker moved down to mys area and in school started heckling us for saying y'all. Black girl asked her what the fuck people up north said and she said "you people" and while wrong imo she flew into a "what do you mean you people?!" Tirade. She had a rough couplr of weeks but they harrased the snobbiness out of her and they started to get along.

Can't say I've moved here at all, but I've been in PA a lot of my life and am recently on a vacation all over Indiana/Kentucky/Tennessee (theme park vacation)

I'll say this. One thing we've noticed when we went to a local bar outside of Louisville is without fail, almost every middle aged white man looked one of two ways. Obese with a long unkempt beard and a hat, or obese and bald and very red, almost always out of breath. Now we've moved on to Pigeon Forge and that still is holding true. It's very odd.

South is good in November, December, January, February, March, April, May (7 months)

North is good in May, June, July, August, September, October (6 months)

Plus, the bad weather in the south is merely uncomfortable. Bad weather in the north actually hurts and is a driving hazard.
