I never really paid them any mind

But last year I discovered the game Pathos which I guess a different version of a game called NetHack. But its crazy fun and now Ive found out that the Mystery Dungeon games take a ton of inspiration from that and the gameplay seems the same

On the switch I was looking at the Pokemon version but its still $60 and doesnt seem to want to go on sale, but theres also a Chocobo version for $40 that might be pretty much the same experience just with moogles and flans instead of squirtles and charmeleons

You should check out dungeon crawl stone soup. It's based on a nethack clone, and it's been continuously updated since 2006. I love it.

It's actually a franchise with a lot of different series under its belt; Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is just the most popular. I've been meaning to check out Chocobo Mystery Dungeon. I tried Etrian MD and didn't really care for it; it seemed poorly designed and I realized right away that it's actually easier to take on dungeons alone than with a party.

For my money Shiren the Wanderer (the franchise's original, not-borrowed series) is the best roguelike/roguelite series out there, full stop. It's got plenty of start-from-zero dungeons for roguelike purists once you finish the main storyline, and the difficulty is intense. I've got different games on DS, PSP Wii and Vita and never get tired of them.

I might be the oddball out here, I really like roguelikes but I don't like the Mystery Dungeon clones at all... and I particularly hate the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon since your dumb AI teammate can make you lose automatically whenever it wants.

Unemployed Ninja started out ok but then very rapidly devolved into the regular Mystery Dungeon slog

I remember enjoying the first pokemon one I played but I remember nothing about it otherwise.

Izuna is actually what got me into roguelikes. Not the original, the second one. I had just gotten a DS and saw the game at a pawn shop. It was cart only and I hadn't even heard of it before, but I gave it a chance and fell in love with the genre.

idk, maybe the second one is better than the first... or it could just be me being old and not liking things

do you have to use an AI teammate? Cause in pathos I usually prefer to just be solo
