You Were There Ikou (Authority) Octopunch has a fair amount of Yanagawa's bouncy energy in the instrumentation and percussion, but I don't feel it as much in the composition. The former keeps it a fun listen, and I'll smile and think about the emoji spam, but my attachment to the track proper is a bit light. Bready Steady Go doesn't really get me, I think. I want such and such things-- a certain kind of repetition, or a certain kind of evolution over the course of the track; some subset of progressions I enjoy; an atmosphere or mood I'm into. Bready Steady Go feels wide of the mark on all of these things, and admittedly it doesn't really need to care whether I want its bread and circuses. The track's for somebody! It's just not me in this case. You know, I never really noticed the way the snare in You Were There lines itself up as 4 over the more prominent 6/8 until now. That's an aside-- it doesn't significantly affect how much I like this track (which is a lot). I really love the way this track feels. In a lot of ways it reminds me of Yoko Kanno music, both in its composition and its wistful energy. The vocals really hit the mark emotionally and I can feel myself floating away listening to 1:30, and it uses the instrumental section at 1:52 to really increase the emotional amplitude of the track before letting the vocals take over to soothe the listener once more. The whole thing just hits in a way that I'm really looking for. When I ran into Bingo Highway during my initial listenthroughs I kept mis-identifying it as something else. It's a cool groove, and there's a pleasing edge to the sounds it uses-- very explicit computer vibes-- and the way it uses them to deliver that digital environment feel. It just doesn't quite get its hooks into me enough. I like NieR music. That's probably not news to anyone. Even so, this was a revelation to me-- the NieR aesthetic combined with a really cool minimalist-style composition that also plays around with its rhythm-- this feels like 7+9 a lot of the time, even when it really just breaks down to 4/4. It's tense and unresolving and still feels like NieR the whole time. It's an unexpected, awesome discovery. I like the chill, inviting feel of The Fine Draw, its RPG tavern-esque sense of relaxation. It grows on me after a while. One thing I really grew to like on repeated listens was the high synth that comes in at 0:23 to play the countermelody. It's really nice. This isn't trying anything super fancy but it's really comfortable with itself, maximizing what it came here to do, and I can appreciate that. ... Copied to Clipboard!
