it's been a long time since I've played it, but I thought it was great.

it's really difficult, though, and can sometimes feel unfair.

buffing up your party/debuffing enemies, having demons with good resistances, etc. is what helped me get through it.

If you've never played a SMT game, you might be better off trying SMT IV first. The SMT series is notorious for being brutally hard, obtuse when it comes to where to go next, and pretty shallow when it comes to character depth. A good demon fusion guide is also basically required since normal enemies will regularly wipe your entire party in encounters if you're not abusing the press turn system which requires explicit knowledge of elemental/weapon weaknesses and a carefully curated team with a mix of single target/AOE/physical/barrier/debuff abilities.

SMT IV is basically baby's first SMT and adds a bunch of quality of life improvements that the other games don't indulge in.

It's very old school and it's also turn based, although it's turn system is pretty unique. If you're cool with that + RPGs, it's a good choice.

I want to say yes, but also it is a little antiquated at times, especially with the game pointing you in the right direction. There's no QoL improvements from the original besides being able to choose your skills and voice acting.

The game is also pretty hard but not unfair. I think Digital Devil Saga or Persona is a better starting point, but Nocturne is fine as long as you set your expectations accordingly
