Man, I didn't realize how many "emotional" breakdowns JFA had until now! Matt Engarde is a clear favorite here, I think, but I do really like Acro's. There's also something powerful about Phoenix at the end of 2-4 day 1 with his head in his hands, thinking all is lost.

Also Engarde reminded me we should do "best villain transformation," too!

The first usage of Phoenix with his head in his hands hits like a truck. JFA has some pretty weak breakdowns overall so it's between that and Engarde, maybe Acro if you really like what they were going for there.

To me an AA breakdown implies that they're the culprit, or at least an uncooperative witness or maybe a rival lawyer who just got a devastating loss. By that standard Engarde wins this by a mile.

But since we're counting Franziska here I think I'm going to toss her a pity vote. It's one of her only moments where I feel like you get to see what she's actually like, behind her cold perfectionist facade.

Franziska's is not bad. Just whips you like crazy! Oh, wait it's the animation where she cries that's her breakdown?

Still couldn't vote anything but Engarde, though. Even though I like his frightened animation better than his breakdown. =p

The weird thing about 'best villain transformation' is that it's actually a surprisingly rare event, a lot of the times it's just a slow unmasking as opposed to a huge reveal, and like pretty much half the times it happened were in the later games (AA6 is OBSESSED with villain reveals lol, AA6 alone accounts for like half the times that a character has a really flashy animation to let you know they're the villain now). By my count, everyone who has a significant 'mask off' moment where their personality permanently changes (including people who play a 'villain role' even if they are not ultimately the villain, but NOT including people who really don't fit that role at all):

Nah, he kinda transforms in his breakdown, but he mostly stays the same even after you expose him.

Yeah he has like... he has a proper breakdown but I didn't really feel like he ever has a proper 'transformation' moment

I think that's meant to be part of his gimmick as Coolest Defense in the West. He never crumbles, even under the most intense pressure...until he REALLY breaks.

Mimi crying animation together with "Reminiscence ~ The Fire Carves Scars" was a great moment
Phoenix breaking down for the first time (for real) also left a strong impact

But Matt Engarde is on another level and gets my vote

As the Wellington fan, his damage animations are pretty incredible. His breakdown, less so, but I do appreciate how it works with Bach.

I think Engarde is fine, but it's Franziska or Phoenix for me. Phoenix's breakdown says it all. It's a shame they use it as the series goes on! Franziska is a rare moment of vulnerability. Until her scene in 3-5, it's really the main thing that makes me appreciate Franziska as a character.
