Whose side are you on?

The valedictorian of a high school in Michigan claims her principal is censoring her speech to her class because she wants to use JESUS CHRIST in her speech next month and now the conservative legal nonprofit First Liberty sent a letter to the principal on behalf of the Hillsdale senior Elizabeth Turner to agree to let her "express her private religious beliefs" by Friday...OR ELSE!!

It said the principal engaged in "unconstitutional censorship" when she commented on the edited speech which has been made public and that she violated her Establishment Clause of the U.S Constittion

First Liberty said her speech is not subject to the Establishment clause because it constitutes as private speech, not government speech and so she should be allowed to give her speech as written

They screenshotted the speech she was going to use including invoking Jesus Christ and trusting in him to bring his kingdom glory.

The principal responded and said "This is better and you fixed the language but you are representing the school in the speech, not using the podium as your public forum. We need to be mindful about the inclusion of religous aspects. These are your strong beliefs, but they are not appropriate for a speech in a school public setting, i know this will frustrate you but we have to be mindful of it".

Elizabeth said she would NOT give the speech if she cannot reference her Christian Faith and said "For me, my personal future relies on my faith and i also want the freedom to be able to address that in my speech if the opportunity arises"

The back and forth over parts of the speech involving tragedy and death was not clear in the emails but Goldsmith maintained that for the appropriateness of the speech and said "While there is a degree of freedom to the content of your speech, there are also considerations of what the content and message should be at a commencement celebration and its appropriateness for the audience. When crafting a speech, it is important to consider purpose and audience. Your speech as a good thesis, it's the connotations of the words that you can avoid"

Her father, Dave Turner, the lead pastor at a church is now considering legal action against the school.

"express her private religious beliefs"

If they're private, why do they need to be expressed?

I kinda think that people try to extend the separation of church and state to illogical extremes. Barring a teacher from forcing a class to say a prayer makes sense, but barring a *student* from referencing religion in a speech is stupid.

It's also ridiculous since know if it was anything other than Christianity, the school would have thrown their support behind the student.

I'm not religious, but I think it's fine. It's her own personal addition, and she isn't pushing it on her graduating class as a whole.

As long as she's not forcing her religion on anyone or infringing on their religious freedom, I see no problem with her thanking God in her speech.

Belief in God isn't false. It makes more sense than having faith in humans.
