it seems kids are always being to prepare for college, in some other countries the focus is on apprentiship programs, some kids in USA dont wont college and are made to feel guilty if they arent doing everything they can to get into college

i think some people could learn it in an apprentice school or through ojt in many years

Theres so few majors in college that actually gets you a guaranteed job when you graduate

i see so many college graduates without a job in their chosen area of studies because of that.

And also, finding a job is hard. Trades usually require a car and you need connections.

Society has been slowly moving away from that mentality for a while now. The damage it's done to numerous millennials sadly cannot be undone.

Hell at this rate millenials will probabaly have been the most exploited generation in history.

The bigger societal argument is that university education is probably the most concrete and guaranteed way to produce social mobility. And generally, the more education the general population has, the better.

because most people want to be paid to sit at a desk and send emails rather than do work that requires thought or sweat.

That isn't just a US thing. Why does everyone think everything is just a US thing...

Some people at 18 already know doing physical labor isnt something they want to pursue in life.

Theres also a lot of higher earning trades that require 4 years of college.

A few reasons, but the biggest I'd say are

1) parents from older generations still see college as the "better" choice, since it's historically been considered a good thing to get a 4 year degree if at all possible, and because there's larger upside in the long term with all those jobs that do actually require some type of 4 year degree to even be considered, not to mention post grad routes; and

2) when you're in high school and you do get accepted to a 4 year school, the consensus of your classmates/high school staff still points to going ahead and taking the regular college route as the obvious choice.

Over the years the trades have been deemed as being the career path for stupid people, and that to truly be successful in life you have to go on and get a degree.

Because the work is grueling and for most people it isn't worth it. It's telling that nearly all of the intense "everyone should go to trade school!" people are grifters who went to expensive colleges. Like Mike Rowe or Dennis Prager.
