Bill Clinton is still president, and The Simpsons is still funny (but not for much longer).
MST3K ends its 10-year run on cable TV, and the N64/PSX wars are at its peak.
The Columbine school shooting was considered a one-off tragedy, and AOL was still the internet provider of choice.

I actually went to bed early New Years Eve because I was afraid that everything would shut down while I was using it. I woke up the next morning and found that everything was still working, and was relieved.

I don't think that makes you a loser at all. The wage gap was smaller; the economy was better; no forever wars; no Patriot Act; no Big Tech hovering up all your data for advertisers, police and governments; America was a first world nation with no huge political troubles or signs of problematic decline; and it might be just me, but I feel like everyone was less of an asshole back then.

Oh, it's not just you, and I've noticed it as well. Maybe it's because I was a child back then, but the 90's did seem to have a more carefree air about it. Then 9/11 happened, and after that, people became more mistrusting and closed-off. Actually, I think 9/11 is when the 90's truly ended, because it marked the shift towards where this country is now.

One of the greatest things I've experienced in my life was the theater on release day. Nerds in costume laughing and playing in the aisle before it started, just a real electric buzz in the air. Folks went nuts when the title crawl started.

Then the actual movie started. Cheers for the Jedi, mood started changing when the space trade ambassadors or wtfever became more obviously racist Asian caricatures. Droid and slapstick became less funny. Then Jar Jar showed up and it got real fucking uncomfortable. I legit saw more than a few black people/couples get up and leave. Then it was a complete shit show from then on as we all know. Lots of groans and I honest to God heard someone yell "FUCK YOU!" at Anakin after one of his lines.

Long story short, virtually nobody over the age of 9 left that theater happy. But we left with a new sense of comraderie, having collectively experienced what would certainly be one of the biggest dissapoimtments of our lives. People in line asked some of us how it was. Most just shook their heads and kept walking. Which took the fire right out of those poor bastards. I tell you, there's not much that'll dampen your spirits quicker than a crestfallen Jedi at a complete loss for words.

The world became a little less colorful that day, and we all left a piece of ourselves in that theater.
