It doesn't even cause damage. With bowser instantly popping up I guess it's tricking the game into thinking you just hit the deathzone of a pit?

areas like whomp's fortress and cool cool mountain have specially-defined death planes at the bottom, which is the standard way of handling death pits

if the game fails to detect any ground beneath mario, it will instantly kill him
pounding into this box will clip mario into the rock, and because there is no ground beneath that geometry, mario dies

on the top of the castle, you can crawl or slide around the back and clip out of bounds, leading to an instant death
