People would get pretty upset if you used "white" or "black" as synonyms for lame and stupid, but somehow "gay" was fine.

"I'm not saying being gay is lame and stupid. I'm saying that's lame and stupid, but using a different word for no real reason. I don't know how connotations work."

It does feel like a really long time ago. I've recently been watching some old Adult Swim shows from the early 2000s and they frequently used it that way. It was really jarring to hear it on tv so casually tbh, kinda reminded me of seeing old black and white tv shows from the 50s or whatever where they were so casually racist.

There's one moment in the Venture Bros where the Monarch just deadpan answers a question with "Cause it's gay?" and I still think that works as a punchline. They're pretty open with sexuality on the show and Monarch even gets up to plenty of kinky stuff, but at the same time the Monarch's a villain. He even uses the R word once and gets called out on it. He defends him saying it because he's a bad guy. I do think it can work in the right context if the person or piece of media using it is clearly not homophobic and using it almost ironically. But that's a tricky situation.

It's very true that there are gay people who use "gay" and even the "f" word as insults. Same way there are black people who use the "n" word as an insult. Obviously that doesn't make it right, but don't underestimate people's capacity to be shitty towards their own.

I feel like an insensitive douche for sometimes using a lot of the phrases guys in here explicitly state triggers them really badly. I'm sorry, i grew up with terrible friends who are not good people. They curse a lot and say things that are controversial. I enjoy the company of my new friends much more, they are more light.

If I hear somebody use gay as an insult, I instantly assume they're stupid. Same for people who say "no homo."

And there are still people who say both things.
