There's no difficulty setting and the game isn't hard, so I don't really need to judge characters much on their in-game utility. Bowser is the best in-battle character just because the "throw Mario at them!" weapon is fun to see.

The game is very easy no matter who you use. I like using Mallow, but he is objectively the worse. Mallow is more of a "his weapon arsenal animations are fun to see" kind of deal.

As a viable asset, Bowser is objectively the worst. Tezuka seems to like picking on Bowser whenever he directs a game. He's always depicting him as a worthless buffoon and I have no idea why. Bowser's design is menacing and his character should be as well.

In terms of characters,

I'm gonna get some heat for this, but... Geno feels out of place.

He's not a bad character. A star warrior who possesses the body of a wooden doll just feels out of place in the Mario universe. A smiling frog (who looks suspiciously like a cloud) fits right in. As for Bowser and Peach, they've been mainstays since the mid-80s.

Geno feels like Square saying, "Hey, this is technically a Square game and we're gonna anime this the fuck up."

Everyone is saying Bowser is the worst but I guess I never noticed that. Although maybe I just didn't care, I was young.

My final team was always Mario, Peach, Bowser.

When I say Bowser is objectively the weak link of the team, I'm not offering a jerk opinion. He has a cap on his stat growth which is lower than everyone else's.

The thing of it is, the game is easy enough that it can be beaten without maxing the characters out. In my play-throughs, I will deliberately hold back the other characters so that Bowser can remain the powerhouse of the team.

If you're the type of player who maxes out everyone to their peak potential, yeah, Bowser gets left in the dust.

Bowser. At least Mallow has efficient mob-clearing abilities.

I think Bowser's only best stat is his HP. Every other stat is the worst or 2nd worst in the game compared to everyone else

Yeah, top number is the natural stat, and bottom number is after applying the stat boost from equipment

because bowser is cooler than mallow
lots of people dont pick characters based on the stats but rather by how much they like the character
so people are more likely to use a party of mario/bowser/peach than one with mallow.
bowser is replaced by geno by a lot of people but almost no one makes mallow a main stay in their party

Yeeeeeeeep! That's part of his problem. Everyone's best weapon is +70-90, except Bowser who is only +40. And his armor is completely garbage too.

When he joins, he's a BEAST and can oneshot everything almost, but I guess the devs were like "we'll give him weaker stat growth and equips to compensate" and went too hard on it >_> idk

Controversial opinion: Mario.

Just because of his fixed nature it's impossible to make more unique team combos like Geno, Mallow and Peach. Or Geno and Bowser and Peach. Or Mallow, Bowser, and Peach.

Peach was op as fuck in that game.

Gotta be honest, there were many battles for which I would've liked to have swapped out Mario. Namely Culex and the Axem Rangers. Sorry, Mario. You're plum useless against boss groups.

Even so, literally all his specials are completely worthless. Terrorize gets some niche uses, but the other 3 are just a waste of MP with how little damage they do with his awful Magic Attack stat >_> At least Mallow has healing, and can wipe out trash mobs with AOE specials

You can put stats in whatever, but certain level ups give more to a stat than others. I think levels 2, 5, 8, 11, etc. give more special, 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. give more attack, and 4, 7, 10, 13, etc. give more HP. That's basically the ideal build, which I usually do >_>

When choose powerups, just check if attack or special give more than 1 point. If they don't then choose HP
