I was confused by that news, because I thought there was only 4 pre-FFVII games.

I thought 4 was localized 2, and 6 was localized 3. Like I thought 2 of the games in the series were basically duplicate due to naming convention.

They were.

In the US, the original FF was on the NES as FF.

Then FFIV and FFVI were localized as FF2 and FF3, because Square was afraid that FFII and FFIII (both Famicom games) were too primitive for an audience that was already moving to the SNES (ie, the Super Famicom).

Then they skipped FFV because they felt like it was kind of meh and wanted to push the most cutting-edge FF they had at the time as the follow-up to FF2 (aka FFIV).

What makes it more complicated is that the English version of FF2 was significantly stripped down from FFIV in terms of game mechanics (because the Japanese had a strong belief at the time that American audiences didn't like/want difficult games - which is also why we got a different Super Mario Bros 2 than Japan did), and was later re-released in Japan as "FFIV Easy Type".

But once the PS1 came out and Square jumped from Nintendo to Sony, a conscious decision was made to just go with the original Japanese numbering, so we got FFVII as FFVII, rather than continuing the NES/SNES numbering and making it FF4 or something.

Over time, various remakes, rereleases, and anthology collections means we got the other three games (FFII, FFIII, and FFV) in the US eventually anyway. But the FF2 and FF3 numbering can still confuse people who didn't live through it.

Well, they've already killed the nostalgia for it by changing the story, so there's a good chance most people aren't going to give a shit when the later games come out anyway.

Squenix has a rather tenuous grasp on what people actually want.

You don't want to play a crappy mobile port.
They will end up making a "switch verison" (like the did for Dragon Quest XI) and then releasing that on PC 6-12 months later too.

So PC will have a half dozen versions of the same game. See what they did with FF8.

That came later, and with substantially less fanfare. The big countdown thing that they were hyping up (which most people were expecting to be a sequel or remake, given that they counted down to it for like a week) was a simple mobile port.

Seriously, FF7, 9, 10, 10-2, and 12 (maybe also 8? idk idc about 8) are already on Switch. Putting the rest on just seems obvious. Hell, the series 35th anniversary is next year. Perfect time to make a big box collection with all of the mainline games.

...that and the fact Western audiences would have been less tolerant about SMB2 having so few differences from the original SMB, given that it re-used the same maps, enemy models, etc, and just changed which enemies were where. Most Americans would have rightly felt ripped off if they bought that.

I think hes referencing the blizzard announcement for their mobile game a couple years ago

the audience hated everything about it and booed when they were told it wasnt coming to PC and one of the presenters gave the tone deaf response of Do you guys not have phones? Or something similar to that
