55 y/o Justine Ang Fonte, a health and wellness teacher at Dalton School in New York City has resigned from her job after she showed a cartoon about MASTURBATION during SEX ED classes to 1st GRADERS!!

She taught at a private school where she told kids they can't be hugged "without consent" as the controversial classes sparked fury from parents although the school still stood firmly behind the program and those that teach it

They said Justine decided to focus on her work as an independent Health Educator and worked toward her goal for over a year.

She showed the students this video last feel from the free sex education series for children called AMAZE

Hedge Fund Billionaire, Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Foundation provided the school funding to this program of 450,000 and helped Fonge with her work

It was created through partnership between Washington DC based nonprofit Advocates for Youth and the organizations Answer and Youth Tech Health

One mother said "Kids have no less than 5 classes on gender identity, this is pure indoctrination. This person should absolutely not be teaching children"..

I mean puberty is not a requirement for masturbation, it's just most kids don't figure it out until then.

I received basic sex ed (penis, vagina, don't let strangers touch them, etc) in grade 1. I received more sex ed (puberty) in grade 5. Then it's watching babies getting born, details of sex, pregnancy cycle, anatomy details, etc in grade 7. Then it's somewhat poorly planned STI scare info and more sex stuff in grade 10 (comprehensive stats on effectiveness of different birth control methods). Canada is decent with it, but the Conservatives had a shitfit a few years back when the Liberals tried to update Ontario's sex ed curriculum. Oh no, acknowledging gay people!!!

I don't really think it's terrible at all. I think kids can be more responsible regarding sex with more comprehensive information, honestly. Otherwise they're finding out anyways at age 13-14 and it's off to the races with teenage pregnancy down south, since the sex ed is so lacking (abstinence only! any form of birth control = bad!!!). I don't think sex ed is going to give kids any ideas that they're not already having - or finding out about through worse, non-educational avenues (porn, regular media).

I recall a family member of mine saying "I grew up on a farm! That kind of stuff got explained to me when I was 5, because well, the animals were doing it!". I also recall working with a father of two boys that framed it a certain way to his two young boys regarding their 'private parts', since they were always whipping them out at as toddlers. Only in the bathroom or bedroom, and only by yourself!

I was reading first graders as 12-13 years old. Still, it is something that should be thought early and that 5-6 age fits with our "Group 3", so I see no issues.

Generally speaking, curricula like this cover pretty simple stuff at that age. Basic anatomy, the idea of consent/how to respond to people not respecting yours, and in this case, the fact that it's normal for masturbation to feel good, all of which is education children can benefit from even at that age. It's not going to be until several years later that the details of intercourse and whatnot come up.

Broadly, though, the idea that kids shouldn't be learning sex ed until they're old enough for it to be relevant is flawed. You generally don't want to pre-empt it by too much, since otherwise you risk them forgetting the details that they didn't care about, but you do want them to have the necessary information before they actually need it.

I think in 4th grade is when they started with the classes. In those the girls and boys were separated and mostly taught about puberty. I dont think they actually did sex-ed till 7th, but that was mostly just watching births.

Yeah, it was 7th grade for me too with the whole condom on banana thing. The teacher teaching it was a total creep too, essentially an old man that everyone thought was a diddler teaching us sex ed. Definitely a pretty awful experience overall

which reminded me of the couple that went to a fertility doctor to inquire as to why they were having trouble getting pregnant. well it ended up sex education in their country was near non-existent and to blame, as they were trying with anal sex, ok?

The issue with defining an age for 'teaching about masturbation' is that...kids younger than 10 masturbate, are not educated about it at all, much nonetheless by age 10. Some kids masturbate literally before they're 5. I was not educated at all regarding masturbation by the time I started doing it, age twelve (half a year to a year of blanks?) - and I went into decent detail about my sexual education. Hell, I enjoyed it, but I was still pretty confused for the first bit. I think to properly teach boundaries and sexual health, you actually need to teach these things. If definitely believe 5 year olds are fully capable of absorbing this information without turning into deviants - quite the opposite.

I think the captioning is just weird and isn't indicating that two different characters are speaking. The wording definitely does not sound like the same person is saying everything.
